This provision is good

 The childminder implements robust procedures to promote children's safety and welfare, including regular checks of the premises to reduce any hazards.  The childminder's positive interaction with children helps to maintain their interest and enjoyment in activities. Children make effective progress in their learning and development.  The childminder effectively supports children's understanding of the world, such as through encouraging their investigative skills.  Children benefit immensely from the praise and encouragement they receive from the childminder; their behaviour is good.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 At times, the childminder misses opportunities to develop children's awareness of healthy practices, in particular the importance of washing their hands.  Children have fewer opportunities to access resources that represent positive images of diversity to help develop their understanding of similarities and differences in others.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 develop further children's understanding of good health, in particular the importance of following regular hygiene practices  make better use of available resources to reflect diversity fully, and to extend children's understanding of similarities and differences in others.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector held discussions with the childminder about her role and responsibilities.  The inspector observed the childminder's interaction with the children.  The inspector sampled documentation, which included the children's information records, and observation and assessment reports. The inspector also examined the childminder's training certificates and policies.  The inspector reviewed parents' feedback by sampling written documentation.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a secure understanding of child protection issues. She is able to recognise when a child is in danger and knows what action to take to promote their welfare. The childminder has good partnerships with parents. She regularly shares information with them to meet children's individual needs. The childminder keeps up to date with changes in childcare practices. For example, she regular attends training courses, and has good links with early years advisors and other providers to share good practice. The childminder has addressed the recommendations set at the last inspection. She has improved the systems for observation and assessments, and uses information from these to effectively monitor children's progress and address any gaps in their learning. The childminder evaluates her provision well; she uses self-evaluation processes to set future targets, and improve the quality of teaching and care for all children.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder makes good use of assessments, including parents' contributions, to plan for children's learning and development. She encourages the children to make choices about their play, for example, by placing resources where children can easily access them. She provides opportunities for children to develop their confidence when playing in groups of various sizes, such as when going out into the local community. Children are beginning to establish relationships with others beyond their home and the setting. They are acquiring the skills they need in readiness for when they go to nursery or school. The childminder promotes children's mathematical awareness through purposeful activities. For example, children are learning to use mathematical language in their play.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder works closely with parents, particularly to help children become familiar with a new environment, such as during a time of change. She obtains relevant information from parents to increase her knowledge about children's individual needs and care routines. Children relate well to the childminder. They confidently approach her for support, indicating they are building good trusting relationships. Children enjoy varied and nutritious meals, and the childminder helps them to understand which foods are good for their bodies. She provides good opportunities for children to develop their physical skills.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Young children's communication and language skills are increasing from their starting point. They have a growing vocabulary; for example, they are able to use two-word sentences. Young children are able to recognise and name 'round' shapes in their play. Their creative ideas are developing; for example, they enjoy exploring and designing using colours, shapes and textures.
