This provision is good

 The enthusiastic childminder provides a welcoming and stimulating learning environment. Children choose from a good range of accessible toys and resources and are motivated to learn. They make good progress in relation to their starting points.  Children have built good relationships with the childminder and her assistant, and confidently explore their surroundings and share their thoughts and feelings with them.  The childminder observes and monitors children's progress successfully and uses this information to help her accurately plan for their next steps in learning. She shares this progress with parents and other settings to provide consistency of care to children.  The childminder involves children and parents in the evaluation of her setting. She reflects on her practice successfully in order to identify strengths and weaknesses. This helps her to provide a quality service for children and families.

p.1

This provision is good

 The childminder carries out regular safety checks to identify and minimise potential hazards to help children play in safety. She develops children's awareness of how to keep themselves safe, such as practising the emergency evacuation drill with them.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always make a wide range of materials readily available for children to explore to extend their creative development.  The childminder does not always make the most of opportunities for children to enhance their knowledge of problem solving to extend their mathematical development further.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 extend the range of activities and materials readily available for children to use to develop their creativity further  strengthen opportunities for children to problem solve to extend further their mathematical knowledge.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder and her assistant playing and interacting with the children.  The inspector looked at a range of policies and procedures, and children's progress records.  The inspector spoke to the childminder at convenient times during the inspection.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder is committed to developing her practice further and has attended numerous training sessions since her last inspection. She works closely with her assistant to support children's settling-in process and monitor her practice. She places a high priority on promoting children's communication and social development. She helps prepare children effectively in readiness for school and future learning. The childminder has reflected well on her environment and resources in order to enable children to make their own choices about what to play with. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder and her assistant have a clear understanding of the procedure to follow if they have concerns about a child's welfare.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Children are confident to select their own activities and to initiate their own games. They enjoy music and singing games and use their imaginations in role play. The children excitedly jump over a rope and the childminder uses these activities to help extend their physical development. Teaching is good. The childminder demonstrates a good understanding of how children learn and knows how to join in with them to extend their learning. For example, she asks questions to engage them in books and stories, and introduces new vocabulary to extend their communication skills. Children learn to take turns as they share the toys and they are learning to negotiate with each other. The childminder monitors children's progress effectively in order to provide further challenging activities to extend their development.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder gives a high priority to children's personal development. Children effectively learn to help and respect each other. The childminder accommodates children's individual needs and routines and uses these to help children to settle effectively. The childminder is a positive role model, and she teaches children how to keep themselves safe and manage their own behaviour. Children eat healthy snacks and the childminder talks to them about foods that are good for them. This, along with other activities and outdoor play, helps to increase children's awareness of healthy lifestyles.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress in their learning and development. They learn to be sociable and independent, and this helps to prepare them for their move on to school.
