This provision is good

 The childminder provides interesting activities that motivate children to learn. She makes accurate assessments of children's development and uses her findings to plan for their individual needs.  The childminder supports children's communication and language skills effectively. Children learn new vocabulary and they learn to solve problems well.  Children behave well. The childminder is calm and consistent in her approach. She provides gentle reminders that help children learn about expected behaviour. Children's emotional well-being is promoted effectively.  The childminder places a strong focus on children's safety. Children learn to keep themselves safe as they regularly practise the evacuation drill and learn about road safety when on outings with the childminder.  The childminder reflects on her teaching practice well. She gains the views of parents and children, and considers these views to help maintain good outcomes for children.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Children do not have consistent opportunities to see a variety of print in everyday situations, to strengthen their early reading skills.  When children first start, the childminder does not always gain as much information as possible from parents about children's skills and abilities to help her plan more precisely.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

 The inspector had a tour of the areas used for childminding.  The inspector read testimonials from parents and spoke to others to gain their views.  The inspector observed children and the childminder during play and discussed children's progress.  The inspector examined policies, documents and children's records.  The inspector spoke with the childminder at suitable times throughout the inspection.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder has a good understanding of her role and responsibilities. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder understands what would give her concerns for a child's welfare and the steps to take if necessary. She carries out regular risk assessments to help ensure children are kept safe while in her care. She keeps her knowledge up to date with safeguarding and first-aid training and changes to legislation. The childminder monitors children's progress effectively and shares her findings with parents to involve them in their children's learning. Parental feedback is very positive. Parents comment how their children enjoy the many varied activities the childminder provides and that communication is good.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The quality of teaching is good. The childminder is enthusiastic and engages children well in their learning. Children make good progress. The childminder has made improvements to her teaching practice. For example, she assesses children well and uses observations effectively to plan for any gaps in children's learning. Children participate in a variety of fun activities. For example, they learn to use monkey bars and to find items they dig for in the sand tray, which supports their physical well-being effectively. Children enjoy imaginative play; for instance, they prepare food and look after babies. The childminder knows when to join in and when to stand back. Children invite the childminder into their play. They enjoy looking at photographs of themselves which gives them a sense of belonging. Children explore the sounds of different instruments and develop a good awareness of numbers, for example, when they play on the numbered rocket at the park.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

They learn letter sounds and enjoy looking at books. All of these experiences help prepare children well for school.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder is kind and caring, and children form secure emotional attachments with her. Children explore the environment and make independent choices in their play. They learn to respect one another and gain an awareness of other cultures and beliefs through a variety of activities. Children develop good social skills as they learn to mix with other children when they visit other groups. They have daily opportunities to be physically active; for example, they play in the garden and visit the local park. Children enjoy healthy snacks and meals, and develop good hygiene practices.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children make good progress. Children gain good independence skills and are confident to learn. They continually engage in activities that help them to develop key skills in readiness for school. As a result, outcomes for children are good.
