This provision is good

 The quality of teaching is good. The childminder understands how young children learn. She develops and plans a broad range of activities, which challenge and excite them. Children make good progress from their starting points.  The children share warm and trusting relationships with the childminder. She gives them lots of praise and encouragement for their achievements, which boosts their self- esteem and, as a result, their behaviour is good.  The childminder actively seeks opportunities to extend her professional development. She has attended a wealth of training courses, which have helped her develop her good knowledge, improve her provision and continually provide good quality care.  Strong partnerships with parents, external agencies and other early years providers ensure regular communication and consistent learning experiences to support children's learning and development successfully.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder has not fully considered how she can further develop children's literacy skills, for example, by enabling children to reach books themselves.  The childminder misses opportunities to teach children skills that promote independence or encourage them to have a go for themselves in managing their self- care.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 increase opportunities to develop children's literacy skills further during play and their daily activities  make the most of all opportunities to encourage children's independence, and for them to manage their own needs.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching and the impact on children's learning.  The inspector sampled a range of documentation, including children's learning records.  The inspector spoke to the childminder and children at appropriate times throughout the inspection.  The inspector took into account of parents' views through written comments.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage. She has good knowledge of child protection issues and is clear about the reporting procedure to follow if she had concerns about a child. The childminder monitors children's progress effectively. She identifies gaps in children's learning and addresses these gaps effectively. The childminder reflects on her practice and identifies areas for improvement, which includes the views of parents and children. She completed training on early mathematics, and used this to promote children's skills effectively. Parents comment that since their children have been in the care of the childminder they have noticed a significant improvement in their social skills. They say that children have grown in confidence and that the childminder communicates well with the families.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder works closely with the parents to gather information about children's starting points. She uses this information alongside her own observations of children to plan for children's individual next steps, and provides good quality learning experiences to support learning. Children gain an understanding of early mathematical concepts, for example 'tall' and 'taller', as they build with bricks and compare the height of the towers. They develop their language skills and extend their understanding. The childminder makes learning fun. For example, as children make spiders out of food, they count, identify colours and learn about the world. Children develop their imaginations well as they play with dolls, change their nappies, dress and feed them.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children feel safe in the childminder's care. They share and take turns. They learn about respect and play well together. The childminder teaches them about the importance of a healthy lifestyle. Children play in the well-resourced garden, where they develop their physical skills, benefit from fresh air and plant and look after fruits and vegetables. Children learn about healthy eating and they follow thorough hygiene routines. These experiences help to promote their health and well-being.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make typical progress from their individual starting points and are keen and motivated to learn. They develop essential skills, which prepares them well for the next stage in their learning and school. The childminder effectively nurtures the children's well- being through her kind and caring approach.
