This provision is good
Children of all ages and abilities make good progress in learning, relative to their starting points. The childminder has effective systems in place to monitor children's ongoing development, and he uses his good observations to plan activities that challenge them and extend their learning very well. Children are happy and confident and show high levels of self-esteem in their interactions with each other and with adults. They show through their behaviour that they feel emotionally safe and secure. The childminder is a good role model, and children benefit from the calm and caring environment that he and his co-childminder provide. The childminder's self-evaluations are good and he has a clear understanding of his strengths and of where there is room for improvement. Action plans are monitored well to evaluate the impact of improvements. For example, strategies to involve parents more effectively in their children's learning are successful because they now routinely

provide feedback about learning at home.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
Children do not always have enough opportunities to learn how to keep themselves safe. Documentation does not consistently reflect the co-childminding arrangements.
p.1
What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

provide a wider range of learning experiences to develop children's safety awareness review records to make sure these consistently reflect the co-childminding arrangements.
p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed the childminder engaged in activities with children. The inspector spoke to the childminder about how he monitors children's progress. The inspector spoke to children, and read feedback from parents. The inspector sampled documents and records required to support children's welfare.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The childminder is committed to continuous improvement. He makes good use of skills and knowledge gained through training to develop his practice. For example, he has attended training relating to the long term impact on children of traumatic events in their lives. This has given him greater understanding of children's behaviour and why they act in certain ways. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a thorough understanding of the procedures to follow to help protect children from harm, and implements these well.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
Teaching is good and children make good progress. The childminder uses children's interests very well to challenge them and extend their learning. For example, children were extremely attentive as they read a book about farming machinery in different places around the world. They were fascinated by machines that harvested rice underwater, and compared this to their observations of familiar local farming practices. Children use play very well to express their understanding of the world around them and how their bodies work. For example, when pretending they were doctors and nurses in hospital, they bandaged the childminder's leg, checked his reflexes, gave him medicine, and earnestly informed him he could go to work but 'you must not run'.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children are well behaved. Older children are kind and caring to younger friends and they share and take turns well. Children enjoy being physically active and make good use of the well-organised outdoor areas. They explore and investigate the good variety of resources available to them and use these creatively. For example, children used play foods and a variety of utensils to re-create egg and spoon races. They concluded that it is harder to balance eggs on spatulas than on ladles and spoons, particularly when moving. The childminder develops strong relationships with parents. This results in the childminder being well informed and able to meet children's changing needs as they grow and develop.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children are well prepared for the next stage in their learning, including, where appropriate, moving on to school. They are confident and articulate, and the childminder promotes their personal independence very well. The childminder's good monitoring of the effectiveness of the educational provision means he is able to quickly identify and close any gaps in learning for individuals, or groups of children.
