This provision is good

 The childminder's good knowledge and understanding of how children learn contributes to her confidence in using a wide variety of teaching methods.  When the time comes, children are ready to move on to nursery or school. The childminder teaches them to recognise numbers and letters. She gives children opportunities to play and learn with other children, helping them to learn to share and take turns.  Children feel happy and secure in the childminder's care. Settling-in methods are carefully planned and tailored to suit individual children's needs and those of their parents.  The well-qualified childminder uses a variety of ways to update and refresh her already good understanding of all aspects of children's learning and welfare needs. This contributes to her high standards of practice.  The childminder encourages children to adopt good self-care skills. She does not rush children, allowing toddlers plenty of time to experiment with their spoons and forks as

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always adapt the environment to help all children, particularly those who have just started in her setting, to easily access the full range of toys and equipment she has to offer.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

 review and adapt the environment, enabling all groups of children to easily select and explore equipment and playthings.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed activities in the childminder's house and spoke to the childminder and children at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector checked evidence of the suitability of household members and viewed a range of documentation, including the safeguarding procedures and attendance registers.  The inspector looked at children's assessment and progress records and discussed planning methods with the childminder.  The inspector took into account the views of parents recorded in questionnaires.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder knows how to protect children and who to report any concerns about children's welfare to. She regularly checks her home and garden for hazards and removes or reduces them, helping to keep children safe from harm. The childminder effectively evaluates all aspects of her provision. She gathers information from parents and other professionals to help her identify how she can continually improve and adapt her setting. The childminder uses a variety of different ways to ensure that she successfully meets all requirements. She proactively seeks clarification of any new requirements she must follow to help maintain very good standards of care and education.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder accurately observes and assesses children's progress. She uses this information, in conjunction with observations parents share, to help her to identify children's next steps in learning. She successfully includes these steps in children's play and explorations. Children enjoy using their senses as they play with natural resources. The childminder helps to extend their learning even more by adding challenges suitable for their age and developmental stage. Children enjoy choosing toys and equipment that interest them. However, the childminder does not always ensure that children who have recently started attending her provision know where they can find a greater variety of playthings that might inspire them or trigger their learning even further.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder provides a warm and welcoming environment for children to feel safe and cared for. Children quickly build a strong relationship with the childminder. They often laugh together as they share jokes with each other. Children are motivated to behave well. They choose coloured stickers when they have been helpful or tried hard. They share their achievements through short comments written by the childminder. She displays these on the wall for everyone to see. The childminder works well with parents. They give the childminder detailed information about children's key routines, such as nap times and toileting needs to help her provide consistent care.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children make good progress in their learning and development. The childminder effectively monitors their progress to help her track groups of children where progress might be slower. The childminder ensures that children continue to learn in different environments, both inside and outside in a variety of different ways.
