This provision is good

 The well-qualified childminder has a good understanding of the Early Years Foundation Stage and how children learn. She interacts purposefully with children to support their learning and development. Children make good progress and are well prepared for the next stage in their learning, such as school.  The childminder forms effective partnerships with parents. She keeps parents well informed about their children's day through written information and daily verbal communication. The childminder observes children in their play and provides parents with an accurate record of their capabilities.  Children follow good hygiene routines and enjoy healthy snacks and meals. They have daily opportunities for exercise and fresh air, which promotes their good health and supports their physical well-being.  The childminder organises her home efficiently to ensure that children can access the areas and resources safely. Children have consistent boundaries and familiar routines.

p.1

This provision is good

They feel safe and secure in the childminder's care.  The childminder is committed to her own continuous improvement and attends training courses whenever possible, to continue to build on the existing good quality provision. She is proactive in keeping up to date with developments, in order to extend children's learning experiences.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder has not fully developed partnership working with other early years settings that children attend, to consistently support children in making the very best progress in all areas.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 strengthen the arrangements for working in partnership with other early years settings that children attend, sharing information to obtain a fuller picture of children's next steps and complement the good learning already taking place.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector spoke with the childminder and children at appropriate times throughout the inspection and carried out a focused observation.  The inspector looked at relevant documentation, such as the childminder's self- evaluation, records of children's learning and development and a selection of policies.  The inspector checked evidence of the suitability of all household members and qualifications of the childminder.  The inspector spoke to a small selection of parents during the inspection and took account of their views.  The inspector took account of parents' views from written testimonials and information included in the childminder's own parent survey.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder regularly reflects on and evaluates her practice to achieve ongoing improvements. She seeks the views of parents through questionnaires. Written testimonials and parents' comments received during the inspection are very positive. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of safeguarding procedures and knows what to do if she has any concerns about a child in her care. All adults in the household have undergone the required vetting procedures to assess their suitability to be in contact with children. Some children attend other early years settings. The childminder has initiated links with staff. She completes a communication book to share information about the children's day. However, she does not share information about children's learning and development progress, in order to ensure that children are making the best possible progress, wherever they spend their time.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder provides children with a good range of activities that help to engage them and build on their interests. Children become confident and independent learners as they make choices about what they want to play with and when. The childminder gets down to children's level and joins in with their play. She uses every opportunity to extend children's learning. For example, she introduces numbers, shapes and new vocabulary as children play with play dough. Children enjoy looking at books independently and with the childminder. The childminder regularly takes children to the library so that they can select books for themselves. The childminder displays enthusiasm and interest as she reads stories to children. This helps to support their love of books. Children enjoy singing sessions with the childminder. They eagerly use wooden sticks to beat in time to their favourite songs and enthusiastically join in with the familiar words.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are happy, settled and confident within the childminder's home. The childminder acts as a positive role model and manages children's behaviour effectively. She gives gentle reminders to encourage children to use good manners and share toys. The childminder gives constant praise and encouragement throughout activities. This enables children to develop their self-esteem and confidence. The childminder helps children to gain an understanding of risk through everyday routines and outings. They wear high visibility jackets when out with the childminder and learn about road safety rules. Children regularly practise the emergency evacuation drill. The childminder supports children to be emotionally prepared for the move to school. They become familiar with other settings when they accompany the childminder to collect older children from school.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

The childminder checks children's progress regularly to identify any emerging gaps so she can provide the appropriate support. She works with parents to put consistent methods in place if there are any identified areas in children's development that needs support. This ensures that children make good progress. The childminder prepares children well for their eventual move to school.
