This provision is good

 The childminder's knowledge of the Early Years Foundation Stage is good, which enables her to meet the legal requirements well.  The childminder has a secure knowledge and understanding about how children learn and develop. Teaching is effective. She plays alongside children, helping them to be engaged and motivated to learn.  Children develop the social skills they need to successfully interact in different situations. They develop tolerance, respect and positive attitudes towards others.  The childminder effectively assesses and monitors children's progress. This information gives her and her co-minder a clear understanding of what children achieve and what they need to learn next, which helps her to plan for their progress.  The childminder attends regular training to increase her knowledge and skills and to improve her practice. For example, she completed a sign along course, which has had a

positive impact on younger children's communication and language.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always make sure that older children have regular access to resources that enable them to make marks for a purpose during their play.  The childminder is not always successful in sharing regular developmental information from the other early years settings that children attend. This does not fully support her to strengthen consistency of care and learning.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

 increase older children's access to a wide range of writing materials and resources to enable them to make marks for a purpose  strengthen partnerships with other early settings that children attend to improve further consistency to children's learning and development.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector discussed the childminder's practice with her at appropriate times throughout the inspection.  The inspector viewed the areas of the premises used for childminding and sampled relevant documentation.  The inspector observed and assessed the childminder's practice and the quality of teaching she provides for children.  The inspector and childminder jointly observed children at play.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a secure knowledge of child protection procedures and is up to date with current legislation. She knows what to do, and where to raise her concerns, if worried about a child's welfare. Together with her co-minder, she has devised and implemented a detailed range of policies and procedures which keep parents informed of their roles and responsibilities. The childminder takes the lead for completing risk assessments, which are robust and help to maintain a safe environment. The childminder seeks the views of her co-minder and parents to help evaluate the provision. Parents' written comments demonstrate they are very happy with the service that is provided.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder and her co-minder plan a good variety of activities and play opportunities to motivate children. This helps children to be active learners who make good progress across all areas of learning. For example, they show confidence and creativity as they piece together train tracks for trains to travel on imaginary journeys. Children enjoy taking part in messy play activities, for example, exploring the textures of cooked spaghetti, dry cereals and shaving foam. Children develop good control as they use tongs to pick up and manipulate the slippery pasta. Children develop a love of books and reading. For instance, they have access to a well-resourced book area, which they access independently throughout the day.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are content and settled and the childminder understands their personal care needs and routines through effective settling-in procedures. This helps children to have a strong sense of belonging and self-esteem that the childminder supports well. Children enjoy healthy and nutritious snacks daily. For example, children access fresh fruits at snack and mealtimes. These experiences promote their growing awareness of healthy lifestyles. The childminder promotes good manners and helps children to manage their own behaviour. For example, she has discussions with children about the importance of having caring hands and sharing with others. This helps young children to develop habits and behaviour appropriate for future learning and relationships.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children enjoy their time at the childminder's home and progress well in relation to their starting points and individual capabilities. They are confident and develop the necessary skills to help prepare them for their future move to school.
