This provision is good

 The childminder has a good understanding of how children learn and develop. She is committed to ensuring that all children have opportunities to achieve their best potential and enjoy themselves in her care.  The childminder offers children clear guidance when minor disagreements occur. She uses appropriate strategies to allow children to think about their actions and consider how to put them right.  Children are very happy, confident and settled in the childminder's care. Their warm interactions with the childminder show that they have built strong bonds with her.  The childminder has a good understanding of how to implement the statutory and other government requirements. She is committed to keeping herself up to date with changes through research and training. This has a positive impact on the service she provides.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always effectively share information about children's learning and development with other settings the children attend.  The childminder does not consistently obtain information from parents about their children's learning at home to enhance the planning of future activities.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 ensure information about children's learning and development is effectively shared with other settings they attend  devise ways to encourage parents to share information about their children's learning at home.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector looked at children's assessment records and planning documentation.  The inspector observed a planned activity and jointly evaluated this with the childminder.  The inspector checked evidence of the suitability of all household members and the childminder's qualifications. She also looked at the childminder's self-evaluation form and discussed her improvement plan.  The inspector asked the childminder questions about her practice at appropriate times throughout the inspection.  The inspector took account of written feedback from parents.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a secure knowledge of how to keep children safe from harm and respond to concerns. She completes daily risk assessments to ensure the environment is safe and has up-to-date first-aid knowledge. The childminder regularly evaluates her provision to ensure she sustains good quality outcomes for children. She has identified potential areas to improve, such as the garden, to develop her provision further. The childminder has established partnerships with the other settings children attend. However, she does not always promote children's further progress by sharing her own learning and development information with the settings.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The quality of teaching is good. The childminder supports learning with activities and outings that the children enjoy, adapting these well to suit their abilities. Children learn early literacy and mathematical skills through very well-planned activities and routines. The childminder carries out regular observations of children to find out about their achievements. This enables her to track their progress and identify any gaps in learning or development. The childminder uses her assessments to plan the next steps in their learning. However, she does not ask parents enough about what their child is achieving at home. Therefore, she does not always have up-to-date information to consider when planning activities to extend their learning even further. Children's communication and language skills are skilfully encouraged in a number of ways. For example, they enjoy talking to the childminder about a trip to the circus.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder has a good understanding of how to support children's emotional well- being. She has settling-in sessions that are tailored to children's individual needs. They benefit from regular physical exercise and fresh air by making full use of the outdoors and nearby amenities to extend their learning. The childminder rewards children with praise for helping to tidy up. She teaches them to respect other cultures and to care for people in the community. Children have enjoyed taking part in activities to design a new local park.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress and work at the levels typically expected for their ages. They are learning to be independent during play and routines. This prepares children well for the next stage of their learning and, eventually, the move on to school.
