This provision is good

 Children play with a wide range of good quality resources. The childminder organises activities based on children's interests, and supports their play and learning well. Children explore freely using their imagination and make good progress towards the early learning goals.  Parents benefit from positive relationships with the childminder. She keeps them well informed about their children's progress and gives them ideas on how to support learning at home.  The childminder talks to children in a calm and respectful manner. This helps them learn how to manage their own behaviour and make friends. Children enjoy close relationships with the childminder, which helps them to feel settled, secure and ready to learn.  The childminder attends a range of training courses to improve her teaching skills.  The childminder provides many opportunities for children to enjoy outdoor play. She promotes their well-being through regular physical exercise.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not routinely reflect on the quality of her practice and identify ways to enhance her teaching skills to an outstanding level.

 use self-evaluation more effectively to identify and access professional development opportunities that will support achieving excellence.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector talked with the childminder and children at appropriate times throughout the inspection.  The inspector looked at a sample of documentation, including children's developmental records, and discussed self-evaluation.  The inspector took account of parents' comments within documentation.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder understands the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage well. She has detailed information about the progress children make and shares this with parents. Her effective assessment systems help her to identify what children need to do next and monitor the progress different groups of children are making. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good awareness of how to keep children safe and ensure their welfare by following clear child protection procedures. She keeps risk assessment records to ensure all potential hazards are minimised. The childminder completes mandatory and additional training. However, she has not identified ways to drive the quality of her teaching practice to an outstanding level. She works well with local schools and other agencies to meet children's needs and ensure families receive appropriate help when needed.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder guides and extends children's learning skilfully because she knows their needs well. She keeps a close check on what children can do. The childminder quickly recognises when a child is not achieving as well as they might and provides them with the support they need. She places a good focus on supporting children's language and communication. The childminder demonstrates how to speak clearly and is skilled at introducing new words. This particularly helps children with speech and language difficulties to make very good progress.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children play and explore happily and with confidence. The childminder follows positive and supportive settling-in procedures. Her communication with parents means she understands children's needs and interests well, so she can help them feel safe and secure in her home. The childminder has good links with local nurseries, which enables them to share information about children's achievements effectively. All children receive good support when they move on to the next stage in their learning. The childminder is a good role model and, as a result, children learn to treat others with respect. Children behave well and help the childminder to prepare snacks. They develop a sense of responsibility as they undertake manageable tasks, such as tidying away toys when they have finished playing.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

The childminder accurately tracks children's individual progress through a broad range of observations and assessments. Consequently, she can ensure that all children, including the two-year-olds, make good progress across all the areas of learning.
