This provision is good

 The childminder is qualified, meets the requirements well and is committed to professional development. For example, she attends courses and reads childcare publications, which helps her to provide good quality care and teaching. She mentors her assistant effectively to ensure he knows her methods and responsibilities.  The childminder organises the environment well and provides a wide range of activities and play experiences that help children to make good progress in their learning.  The childminder supports children's early speaking and listening skills effectively. For example, she talks to younger children about what they are doing and encourages them to listen carefully and repeat words.  Children are happy, relaxed and learn about positive behaviour. The childminder is consistent in teaching children what she expects from them and sets clear boundaries.  The childminder has good relationships with parents. The childminder and parents

share children's achievements. Children's individual needs are met and their learning is extended by building on what children already know.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Children do not always have enough opportunities to increase their early reading skills.  Children do not always have a clear understanding of the need to keep safe and identify hazards for themselves.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 increase children's awareness of familiar words and signs  improve children's understanding of safety so that they learn to identify dangers within the environment for themselves.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the children playing inside.  The inspector looked at children's development records, a selection of policies and procedures, and the medication records.  The inspector talked to the childminder at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector took account of the written views of parents and considered these.  The inspector viewed the areas children play in.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder knows the children well and has a good understanding of how they learn. She regularly observes children as they play. Following recent evaluations, she has improved this process and the way she plans for their future learning. The childminder identifies children's next steps in learning and regularly checks their achievements. This enables her to plan an individualised learning programme that helps children to make good progress. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has attended training. She shares her knowledge with her assistant to ensure he knows what to do should there be any concerns about a child's welfare. The childminder identifies her strengths and areas for development. Parents' written testimonials are very positive about the services the childminder provides.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder obtains detailed information from parents before children start. She has a settling-in period and uses this time to get to know the children. This enables her to plan activities that focus on children's interests and abilities so that little learning time is lost. The childminder provides activities that encourage children to develop their physical skills and begin to use their imagination. She encourages children to develop their sensory skills. For example, they touch and feel different objects and materials as they explore their surroundings. The childminder helps children to learn about others, for instance, they look at family pictures and talk about the differences between each other. This helps children to value and respect others. She supports children who are learning English as an additional language through the resources she provides.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are happy, relaxed and settled. The childminder is a good role model. She teaches children about sharing and taking turns and is consistent in her approach. Children listen carefully to the childminder and receive praise when they follow instructions. Children build strong bonds with the childminder and her family. They enjoy the interactions and spontaneously take books to the childminder for her to read to them. The childminder supports children's well-being effectively. For example, she recognises signs of tiredness and responds quickly to the individual care needs of children.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress in their learning. They develop physical skills and learn about numbers, shapes and colours through the activities the childminder provides. Children join in activities willingly and respond well to praise and encouragement. The childminder's good teaching and encouragement prepare children well for their next stage in learning.
