The childminder has secure, long-term relationships with families. Children are secure and happy.

p.1

 The childminder sometimes asks children a succession of questions without giving sufficient time for them to think and respond with full answers.  The childminder does not always take the opportunity to promote children's mathematical development during the activities and daily routines.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 give children time to think about and answer questions in their own way, to help them solve problems for themselves and make valuable contributions to discussions  increase the opportunities to extend children's mathematical understanding and development throughout their activities.

The childminder has addressed previous inspection recommendations. Her observation, assessment and planning procedures are more effective and she monitors children's development well. The improved communication systems with other providers promote continuity of care and learning for children. The childminder uses ideas well to increase activities and resources for children. For example, she has increased the range of materials for sensory and messy play. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder completed appropriate child protection training, which has given her a secure knowledge of the procedures to safeguard children's welfare. The childminder completes robust risk assessments and suitability checks to keep children safe.

p.3

Children show a good understanding in their imaginative play. For instance, they role play going to the doctor when they pretend to be poorly. They know that animals go to the vet for treatment. The childminder follows children's ideas and interacts well to promote their individual developmental steps. Children focus well and enjoy using the dough, which they manipulate into different shapes. The childminder promotes children's communication and language throughout their activities. They enjoy stories and the childminder teaches them basic signing, which they use when singing nursery rhymes. The childminder teaches children to have respect for others and to understand about differences. She provides age- appropriate activities that reflect their own and other backgrounds.

p.3

The childminder has effective settling-in procedures to help children form secure attachments to her. Children feel safe in her care and the childminder supervises them well. For example, she frequently checks sleeping babies. Older children learn about safety through a range of interesting topics and trips, such as going to the fire station. Children enjoy physical exercise during outdoor play and at gymnastic sessions. They develop competence as they use equipment to practise jumping and balancing. The childminder helps children to develop the skills that prepare them well for school. For example, children learn to listen, concentrate and dress themselves.
