This provision is inadequate
The childminder does not ensure children's safety when they are using the outdoor play equipment and does not always help children to understand how to use equipment safely. The assessment of children's stage of development is inaccurate. The childminder does not clearly identify what children are capable of or where they are not making the expected progress. The planning of activities does not meet the needs of the children. The focus is not always appropriate and does not help to close any gaps in children's learning. The childminder does not share concerns about children's development with parents and carers, and therefore support is not consistent. The childminder does not effectively support children's communication and language skills. For example, she does not provide enough opportunities for children to speak, or think and respond to questions and comments.
p.1
It has the following strengths
The childminder is friendly with the children. She is consistent in helping them to learn about turn taking, sharing and cooperation with others. The childminder effectively supports children's move into the setting. She discusses each child's needs with parents and carers and extends the settling-in visits if needed, so that children are comfortable.
p.1
What the setting needs to do to improve further
To meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:

p.3
Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector discussed the planning of activities with the childminder. The inspector checked evidence of the suitability of adults living on the premises. The inspector looked at relevant documentation, such as the childminder's self- evaluation and evidence of training. The inspector took account of feedback from parents and carers and the recent parent and carer questionnaire results.
p.3
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is inadequate
The arrangements for safeguarding are ineffective. The childminder has not risk assessed all of the large play equipment in the garden and allows younger children to use the slide and trampoline when they are not age appropriate. Furthermore, these are sited on paving slabs without any additional safety measures. The childminder has undertaken some training around different aspects of teaching. However, she fails to implement this knowledge to support children's learning and development. The childminder does not effectively evaluate her own practice or monitor children's progress. Gaps in children's learning are not being addressed or discussed with parents and carers. The childminder does have a suitable understanding of child protection issues. She is proactive in contacting other settings that children attend to establish how they will work together to support children.
p.4
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is inadequate
The quality of teaching is poor. The childminder does not have a clear understanding of where children are at in their learning. She fails to recognise where children are not at their expected stage of development. The planning of activities does not focus on where children need support in their key skills. The childminder is enthusiastic when she interacts with the children. However, she takes over their games, such as small-world play. She provides a constant narrative, without giving children the opportunity to make any meaningful contributions. When she asks questions, she does not give children time to think and respond. Children fail to engage with these activities and quickly move away. The childminder regularly shares information with parents and carers about their child's learning. However, it does not give a clear or reflective picture of children's stage of development.
p.4
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are inadequate
The childminder does not consistently help children to develop an understanding of what is safe. As a result, children sometimes use resources inappropriately. Children are not being supported to become active learners, due to the poor quality teaching. The childminder does provide a well-resourced and safe indoor environment. She makes appropriate use of the space so that children can move around and enjoy different activities in different areas of the house. She also provides children with daily opportunities to play outdoors so that they can enjoy fresh air. The childminder encourages children to try the healthy options provided at mealtimes. She also explains to them about the importance of handwashing to promote good hygiene.
p.4
Outcomes for children are inadequate
Children make inadequate progress towards the early learning goals. The childminder's interaction hinders children's ability to develop their communication and language skills. Children do not receive appropriate support to develop the skills they need for their future learning.
