This provision is good

 The childminder has strong teaching skills and uses these effectively to plan a range of activities that children choose for themselves and those that are adult-led. She tailors the experiences to children's individual learning needs. As a result, children do well in their learning and development.  The childminder provides an inclusive and welcoming environment. She ensures children build a sense of self-worth and helps them to understand that the differences and similarities of others are equally important and special.  The childminder aids children to take care of their own needs and develop independence to carry out tasks appropriate for their age.  The childminder has a good range of policies and procedures that guide her good practice. She keeps good documentation and records helpful information that assists her to monitor the quality of her service.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder is less consistent in planning appropriate activities that support young children's early writing skills.  Although the childminder promotes healthy lifestyles well, she is less consistent in encouraging different ways for children to enjoy food which supports healthy eating.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 provide more opportunities for children to practise making marks with a variety of materials to develop their early writing skills  explore ways to encourage children to learn more about food and healthy eating.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed children's play and learning during the inspection.  The inspector sampled a range of documentation, including developmental records, key policies and procedures, training certificates and the childminder's self-evaluation.  The inspector conducted a joint observation with the childminder and discussed findings.  The inspector took account of parents' views through cards, emails, questionnaires and letters.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder has effective processes to assess the quality of children's learning. She encourages the contributions of parents and others involved in children's learning to strengthen the planning and monitoring processes. These effective partnerships help her to evaluate the quality of her provision for children and identify areas for development. The childminder seeks support and advice to update her knowledge and skills through training. For example, she has improved how she monitors children's learning. This helps the childminder to identify any gaps in their development and to close these, improving outcomes for children. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder monitors visitors and makes sure those who have regular contact with children are suitable. She is aware of the signs that may cause her to have concern for a child's welfare and how to report these to protect children from harm.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder makes learning exciting to children because she varies their experiences well. She plans activities she knows will challenge what they already know and can do. The childminder stays close to children interacting to help extend their learning. She engages children's interests in activities, such as enjoyment of books and stories that helps to promote their communication and speaking skills. She helps young children to develop their vocabulary through repetition and to use what they know to speak in short sentences. The childminder plans a range of opportunities in the community that build on children's mathematical skills, such as choosing and counting fruit when out shopping.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder is affectionate towards children, which helps them to develop close and trusting relationships. She successfully helps children learn about social expectations, such as what is not acceptable and how to get along with their friends. Children's behaviour is good. The childminder organises her environments so children learn to negotiate space and move confidently. She encourages healthy lifestyles by providing opportunities for children to have regular outdoor play. She encourages children to move in new ways to promote their physical skills. Children take some risks in their play, such as climbing ladders so they learn how to keep safe and know their limitations. The childminder gives children the emotional security and skills that help them to manage new situations and be ready for their future learning and school.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress in their learning and development. They are keen to engage in the play experiences and to build on what they already know.
