choose their play materials and follow their individual learning styles.

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder tracks children's progress in most areas of learning. However, this is not fully effective to ensure all children are being suitably challenged and achieving well in all the areas of learning.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector had discussions with the childminder and chatted to the children at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector observed the childminder's interaction with the children during activities inside the home.  The inspector sampled a range of documentation including records relating to the children and safeguarding procedures.  The inspector jointly observed an activity with the childminder.  The inspector took account of the written views of parents.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder demonstrates a good understanding of the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage and of how children learn. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good knowledge of safeguarding issues and is aware of her role and responsibilities. She ensures all household members are suitable, and she is fully aware of her duty to protect the children in her care. The childminder evaluates the setting well, to identify and deal with any areas for development. She shares the children's progress records with parents so they are aware of the next steps in their children's learning to help them extend their children's learning at home. The childminder has good systems to liaise with other providers where children attend, which ensures a shared approach to promoting children's learning.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Children enjoy their time with the childminder. They benefit from the childminder's caring nature and her enthusiasm to promote learning through play. The childminder enjoys supporting children's learning and takes an interest in what they say and do. The childminder promotes children's vocabulary due to her good interaction with the children. She gets down on floor level to play with young children and encourages them in their play. The childminder provides a wide range of toys and resources for the children. They enjoy the many activities and chat happily to the childminder while playing. Children are encouraged to count during their play, and the younger children are repeating the numbers after the childminder and developing confidence to count independently.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children develop warm and secure relationships with the childminder, who supports the children well and takes care of their individual needs. The childminder promotes children's safety effectively and good systems ensure the home remains secure at all times. Children learn about keeping healthy because the childminder talks about why they need to wash their hands before eating or after messy play. They go outdoors in all weathers to have regular fresh air and exercise. Children behave well and the childminder helps children to learn skills to prepare them for their later lives, such as sharing, taking turns and being polite and kind to each other. She helps prepare children for the move to school by encouraging them to develop the skills needed to ensure a smooth transfer.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress in their learning and develop the skills they need to be ready for school. They learn respect for others and how to behave in appropriate ways as they play.
