This provision is good

 The well-qualified childminder provides a broad range of activities that motivate children to learn. She assesses their development well and plans activities that offer a good level of challenge. This helps children to make good progress and helps to prepare them for school.  The childminder successfully promotes children's emotional well-being. She has a warm, caring approach. Children settle really well and show a strong sense of belonging. They have formed close attachments with the childminder.  Good partnerships with parents and other settings that children attend ensure a regular exchange of information. This helps everyone to provide continuity in children's learning and development.  The childminder evaluates her practice well and seeks the opinions of parents to help her make improvements. She updates her knowledge of safeguarding children through training. This contributes to her understanding of how to keep children safe and to

make ongoing developments to her practice.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always present resources attractively to support younger children to make independent choices.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

 improve the presentation of resources so that younger children are able to make independent choices.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector checked evidence of the childminder's suitability, training certificates, risk assessments, policies and procedures.  The inspector conducted a joint observation with the childminder.  The inspector toured the premises used by children during the inspection and observed children's activities.  The inspector took account of the views of parents from written comments they had provided.  The inspector held conversations with the childminder and children throughout the inspection.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder is clear about child protection issues and the correct procedures to follow if she has concerns. The childminder carries out regular risk assessments for the home and outings to minimise hazards for children. The childminder is fully aware of the need to promote children's positive awareness of the similarities and differences in society. She provides stimulating activities that help children to develop a greater understanding of the world in which they live. They frequently look at pictures of their families and talk about who they are.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder is excellent at following children's interests and their lead in play. She is always on hand to support and encourage them to try things for themselves and to persevere with new skills. Babies are given the space to develop their physical skills as they learn how to move around. Older children practice their skills with a ball as they learn how to throw. Children build on their early language skills as the childminder speaks appropriately with them and repeats words to help them learn how to say them correctly. The childminder gathers effective information about children's starting points and carries out regular assessments of their progress. This helps the childminder to quickly identify any gaps in children's learning and development and to put strategies in place to ensure their learning improves and they catch up quickly.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder acts as a good role model and has high expectations of all children. Her calm approach and consistent interaction help children to feel valued and this promotes their good behaviour. Clear guidance is given when behaviour is unwanted and this helps children learn how to behave towards others. The childminder makes good use of her environment, indoors and outdoors. She organises the wide range of resources well. However, the organisation of books and resources does not always support very young children to make their own choices and initiate their learning. Children have many chances to be active through daily access to the garden and local environment. Children's understanding of healthy eating is promoted through discussions about nutritious foods.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress in their learning and development. They increasingly develop practical skills and learn to care for themselves.
