This provision is good

 The childminder uses training and other sources of information to help her to plan for improvements, such as improving children's play experiences outside.  Children are happy, confident and motivated to learn. They form secure emotional bonds with the childminder and equally as well with her assistant.  Children's independence skills are developing well; they can choose freely from a range of resources matched to their interests and stage of development.  Children learn about the world around them. The childminder celebrates festivals from all over the world and provides a range of resources to reflect diversity.  Written risk assessments, fire drills and thorough emergency procedures are in place to promote the security and safety of children.  The childminder reflects on the quality of her setting and gains the views of parents as part of the process.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not organise the environment so that it always promotes younger children's independence skills.  The childminder has not fully considered how she can consistently promote good hygiene during nappy changing routines.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 organise the environment to help younger children fully develop their independence  use every opportunity to ensure that good hygiene is fully promoted.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector toured the premises and observed children playing.  The inspector undertook a joint observation with the childminder and discussed children's development.  The inspector reviewed children's development records, a selection of the childminder's policies, children's records and evidence of suitability.  The inspector spoke with the childminder and children at appropriate times throughout the inspection.  The inspector took account of the information provided in the childminder's self- evaluation document and written references from parents.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder has a good understanding of the Early Years Foundation Stage and associated legal requirements. As a result, children are making good progress in their development. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder and her assistant can clearly describe what they would do if they had any child protection concerns; they know the signs that would cause them concern. The childminder is proactive in making good partnerships with other early settings. She regularly shares information about children's next steps in development to complement and promote children's learning experiences and progress. The childminder effectively monitors all aspects of her provision including her assistant's performance. She builds her assistant's knowledge through appropriate training and coaching.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The quality of teaching is good. Children's communication skills are progressing well. They learn new words through the good interactions of the childminder and her assistant. The childminder provides a wide range of interesting activities that children clearly enjoy. Story time comes alive as children join in enthusiastically with well-known stories and play with props and puppets. Young children thoroughly enjoy exploring different textures during messy play activities. They scrunch, pat and mould dry cereals with aerosol cream. Older children describe the mixture as 'cold' as they try to build a mountain before the younger children try to push it down. Effective observations and ongoing assessments enable the childminder to highlight children's next steps in development. She continually updates parents about children's learning. The childminder explains activities so that parents can continue the learning at home. Children are learning the skills they need to move on to

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder communicates effectively with parents so that they can work together. They discuss children's diet to provide a balance of foods and encourage children to try new things. The childminder makes the most of opportunities to teach children how to keep themselves safe. They discuss road safety and how to leave the home in an emergency. Each day, children play in the fresh air in the garden and on regular visits to local parks, farms and play areas. The warm and secure environment helps build children's self-esteem. The childminder and her assistant regularly praise children and they quickly become confident. Children learn good manners and how to share and take turns through gentle and sensitive support. They learn about other people through regularly taking part in outings, discussions and activities.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are happy, confident and eagerly take part in activities which provide challenge and new experiences. They enjoy their time at the setting and form good friendships.
