Outcomes for children Requires improvement
p.1
This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:
Younger children's learning is not always extended and their communication and language skills are not promoted effectively. The childminder does not check on her assistant's performance to help improve her teaching skills. Children who are physically active are not always provided with opportunities to help them release their energy.
p.1
It has the following strengths
The childminder puts children's safety at the centre of her practice. She and her assistant demonstrate a good understanding of how to protect and safeguard children. The childminder knows what to do if she has concerns about a child in her care or if allegations are made. She has robust systems in place to make sure that hazards are minimised. The childminder provides a warm and friendly environment where children feel safe and secure. Children develop strong bonds with the childminder and her assistant. They are confident, sociable and self-assured. The childminder effectively uses assessments to check children's learning. She uses the information she gathers to plan and provide some challenging and interesting learning experiences for children. She closes gaps in their learning quickly. Partnerships with parents are well developed and the childminder works closely with them. She exchanges information about children's prior and ongoing learning. There

p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector held discussions with the childminder and spoke to the assistant and children at various times during the inspection. The inspector observed the childminder, her assistant and the children while they took part in activities and play. The inspector carried out a joint observation with the childminder. The inspector sampled children's development records and discussed children's progress with the childminder. The inspector sampled relevant documentation, including the childminder's self- evaluation form, policies and procedures. She also checked the qualifications of the childminder and her assistant along with their suitability to work with children.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement
The childminder has a sound understanding of the Early Years Foundation Stage. She has a secure understanding of how to promote safety for the children including e-safety. Safeguarding arrangements are effective. The childminder understands the importance of evaluating her provision to implement ongoing improvements. She has addressed the recommendations from her previous inspection, although there are further weaknesses in her practice. The childminder works daily with an assistant. She holds meetings with her assistant to discuss the children's development. However, she does not observe or check on her assistant's teaching to help her improve. The childminder has attended regular training to help develop her knowledge, although this has not been extended to the assistant. She meets regularly with other childminders and they share practice and ideas.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement
The childminder is experienced and well qualified. However, she does not always use her knowledge to effectively teach the younger children. She teaches older children well and interacts with them in a positive way to extend and challenge their learning. However, there are inconsistencies in her teaching methods. While the childminder spends time with the older children, the assistant takes care of the younger children. Therefore, the childminder does not always talk to the younger children or interact with them in exciting ways to extend their communication and language skills. Older children willingly take part in activities with enthusiasm. They enjoy finding out about polar bears and watching the ice melt. The childminder counts with the children and she uses words, such as long, short and tall to help promote older children's early mathematical skills. Younger children use their fingers and thumbs well as they mould and use play dough.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children are happy and settled. The childminder follows children's home routines, helping them to feel secure. She helps children well to develop an understanding of sharing and taking turns. She manages children's conflicts and unwanted behaviour in a calm and consistent manner. Children's physical development is good. However, the environment provided does not consistently enable children to be physically active. This is particularly noticeable when children are feeling boisterous and have excess energy. The childminder provides children with regular opportunities to develop their social skills and gain confidence with other groups of children. Older children are beginning to learn to respect each other's views and opinions. Children follow good hygiene routines and enjoy nutritious snacks and meals, helping to promote their good health.
p.3
Outcomes for children require improvement
Children develop increasing independence in practical skills and caring for themselves. The older children are progressing generally well. They are acquiring some skills for their future learning and are well prepared for the move on to school. They concentrate and listen and are willing to try new things. Their literacy and mathematical skills are developing well. Younger children's progress is steady.
