This provision is good
The childminder gathers information about children's starting points from their parents on entry to enable her to accurately assess their learning needs. The childminder plans age-appropriate activities for children that support their interests and offer challenge and excitement. As a result, children are motivated and eager to learn. The childminder has a strong understanding of child development. She uses the skills gained through her qualification and relevant training courses to promote positive outcomes for children. The childminder provides a welcoming and homely environment for the children. They settle well because she helps them to feel safe and confident in her care. The childminder forms strong partnerships with parents and shares information about children's progress with them to promote their learning at home. The childminder monitors the play environment and the activities she provides to

inform her self-evaluation. She provides parents with questionnaires, and observes children, to help her to evaluate the strengths of her practice and the areas for improvement.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
Activities to promote children's learning and development in areas where they make less progress are not sufficiently sharply focused to ensure that any gaps in their learning close rapidly.
p.1
What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

provide more sharply focused activities that promote areas of children's development where they are making less progress, and ensure any gaps in their learning are quickly closed.

Inspection activities
The inspector observed how the childminder interacts with children in her care. The inspector held discussions with the childminder and spoke to children throughout the inspection. The inspector jointly observed an outdoor activity with the childminder and discussed outcomes for children. The inspector took account of the views of parents by reading their feedback and questionnaires. The inspector looked at children's progress records, self-evaluation, suitability and qualifications and a range of other documentation, including policies and procedures.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The childminder has a secure understanding of the Early Years Foundation Stage. She has effective systems in place to monitor progress in children's learning. She keeps good records of children's development and shares these regularly with parents and others involved in their care. She understands the children well and considers their likes and dislikes when providing activities. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder fully understands the procedures to follow to protect children from harm. She carries out effective risk assessments of her premises and on outings, and helps children learn to keep themselves safe.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder successfully observes and assesses children's development to identify the next steps in their learning. She provides activities and experiences that stimulate children's imagination and promote learning in all areas. The childminder fully understands that some children learn best when outdoors. She provides a good variety of natural resources for children to explore and investigate outside. Children thoroughly enjoy exploring the properties of soil, sand and water as they move it around the garden in various containers and toy vehicles. The childminder introduces mathematical concepts, such as heavy and light, full and empty. She provides explanations, suggestions and vocabulary as children play to support their communication and language development. However, activities are not yet sufficiently focused on areas where children progress less well, and this does not ensure that any gaps in their learning close very quickly.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder understands the importance of helping children to form strong emotional attachments to their carers. She helps children to feel secure by working closely with their families to ensure routines are consistently managed. The childminder displays photographs of children's family members to help them to feel at home and comfortable in the setting. Children benefit from fresh air and exercise every day and they learn how to keep themselves healthy. The childminder provides children with a nutritious and varied diet. Children learn how to manage their personal care routines and become independent. The childminder teaches children about the world they live in. She provides positive images of people to help children learn about diversity and inclusion, and they go out into the local community where they learn to socialise and respect differences.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children progress well in their learning because the quality of the childminder's teaching is good. She prepares children well for the next stage of their learning and school. She encourages children to use their hands in their play to strengthen their fingers ready for learning to write. She instils in children a love of books and reading, and provides a good variety of literature for children to explore.
