This provision is good

 The childminder's home is welcoming and inviting. Children's personal photographs and artwork are displayed in her home and this contributes towards them developing a secure sense of belonging.  The childminder has developed effective, trusting and supportive partnerships with parents. She regularly shares the progress children make with parents to help provide continuity for children's learning.  The well-qualified childminder accurately monitors children's progress. This helps her to promptly highlight where children may require further support in their learning.  Children develop a secure understanding of the wider world around them. They have regular opportunities outdoors to explore the natural world. They learn how things work and use toys with various mechanisms.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Children do not always have opportunities to lead their own play and become deeply involved in self-chosen activities.  The childminder is not always successful at helping children to listen, absorb and respond to what adults say.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 create more opportunities for children to make even more choice about their play, in order to further support their independence and child-led learning  consider ways to fully support children to develop skills to listen, absorb and respond to what adults say.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector looked at children's learning records and a range of policies and procedures, and checked evidence of the suitability of household members.  The inspector carried out a joint observation with the childminder and discussed her self-evaluation methods.  The inspector spoke to the childminder, her assistant and children at appropriate times throughout the inspection.  The inspector took account of the views of parents as recorded in children's learning records.  The inspector toured the areas of the setting used for childminding.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder and her assistant have a good understanding of safeguarding and child protection issues. They implement robust policies to help keep children safe from harm. The childminder and her assistant develop their skills through attending regular training. She provides supervision to her assistant to help improve her personal effectiveness. The childminder continually reflects on her practice and accurately identifies her strengths and areas for further development. She values the views of her assistant, parents and children to help provide the best outcomes for children.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The quality of the childminder's teaching is good. She gathers information from parents about children's current learning needs to plan purposeful activities that are well matched to their needs. Children demonstrate a keen interest in developing their emerging writing skills and tools are readily available to support their mark making. The childminder pays particular attention to talking to children and asking questions as they play. However, the childminder in her eagerness to talk to children, sometimes does not give them time to fully absorb, listen and respond to what is said in their own unique way as their language emerges. Babies are supported well by both the childminder and her assistant, who are knowledgeable about what babies need to experience in order to help them to move on in their learning.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder works well with her assistant to create a friendly, supportive and caring environment where children and their family are respected and valued. Children behave well and their sense of belonging is demonstrated through secure attachments to the childminder and her assistant. Children are confident to explore their surroundings and demonstrate that they feel safe as they move around the childminder's home with ease. There is a wide selection of interesting and accessible resources to interest and engage children. However, the childminder sometimes directs children's play and makes choices for them. This occasionally limits opportunities for children to follow their own play ideas and make independent choices.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

The childminder and her assistant have a secure understanding of how best to promote the learning and development of all children. Consequently, children make good progress from their starting points and demonstrate their readiness for the next stage in their learning, including school.
