 The childminder helps children to learn through enjoyable activities and experiences. She provides them with a good range of resources so that they can choose independently. They make good progress in their learning.  The childminder works with parents to support children to settle well. This ensures children are happy and secure in her care.  The childminder provides parents with regular updates about their children's learning and development. She uses robust risk assessments to help her keep children safe in all areas of her home and on outings.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always extend opportunities for children to use writing and drawing materials during their play, which means they have fewer opportunities to independently practise their early writing skills.  The childminder misses some opportunities to extend children's understanding of how changes occur in the natural world.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 provide more opportunities for children to independently develop their early writing skills indoors and outdoors  strengthen opportunities for children to learn about the natural world.

p.2

 The inspector looked at the areas of the home used for childminding.  The inspector observed the childminder playing with the children during a range of activities.  The inspector discussed the childminder's policies, looked at children's records and checked evidence of the childminder's suitability and qualifications.  The inspector discussed activities with the childminder.  The inspector took account of the views of parents expressed in their written responses.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has attended regular training to provide her with the most recent information to protect children in her care from harm. The childminder has a clear understanding of how to implement the learning and welfare requirements. She regularly checks children's progress. Her effective, ongoing monitoring ensures she can quickly notice any gaps in their development. The childminder works closely with parents so that children's individual needs are well met. She assesses and evaluates her work with the children to ensure she makes continual improvements in all areas. For example, she has successfully developed her garden as a suitable play area.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder's early years qualification provides her with a good knowledge and understanding of how children learn. She uses her skills to provide a good balance of activities that ensure children develop well. The childminder supports children to become confident talkers; for example, she uses conversations during activities to extend their language skills. Children delighted in sorting and matching some coloured stones. The childminder helped them to name the different colours and encouraged them to count with confidence as they matched the stones. The childminder fostered children's imagination during pretend play. She helped them to develop their physical skills as they built fences for the farm animals. The childminder provides activities that inspire children's interest and help them follow their own ideas.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder's home is warm, comfortable and welcoming. She carefully encourages children to develop good independence. Children behave well and the childminder uses distraction effectively to prevent them from becoming upset or frustrated. She shows them how to share well and to be helpful to others. Children are confident and clearly know the routines. They are eager to help to tidy up before snack time. The childminder teaches children about healthy lifestyles through well-balanced meals and outdoor play in the fresh air. The childminder's care ensures that children quickly develop the self- assurance needed for the next stage in their learning.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

The children's learning records show that they are making good progress in all areas. Children are quickly gaining the skills they need for moving on to school.
