This provision is good

 The childminder shows secure teaching skills. She helps children well as they master the early steps in their development and encourages them to extend their learning as they play.  The childminder builds children's self-esteem and confidence to support them emotionally and enable them to manage change, such as being ready for the move to school or pre-school.  The childminder promotes children's awareness of their special qualities and helps them learn that others may have different faiths, cultures, languages and abilities. This helps children to value and respect people's similarities and differences.  The childminder knows children well and recognises when they become tired or hungry. She takes appropriate steps to help them regain the energy to carry on learning.  The childminder has a good understanding of the requirements and implements effective policies and procedures to support children's learning, safety and welfare.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Overall, the childminder provides a broad range of activities that promote all areas of learning. However, she is less consistent with making the most of all opportunities to encourage children to think for themselves and extend their play.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 develop further opportunities for children to think for themselves, solve problems and consider why things happen and how things work to fully extend their play and learning.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed children's play and learning inside and outside.  The inspector sampled a range of documentation, including children's development records, policies and procedures, and the childminder's self-evaluation processes.  The inspector observed the childminder during an activity and held a discussion afterwards with her to discuss teaching practices.  The inspector took account of parents' and children's views through written questionnaires, emails, letters and cards.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder has thorough processes to observe and assess children's learning and development. These include effective sharing of information with parents and other settings children attend. The childminder promotes a consistent approach to planning children's learning and ensures parents are well informed. The childminder also seeks the views of parents and children when evaluating her provision. She maintains strong links with other early years professionals and seeks training opportunities to help her develop her knowledge and skills. This has strengthened her teaching practices and understanding of safeguarding issues. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of the procedures to follow if she has any concerns about a child's welfare.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder is consistent in her teaching skills. She knows how children like to learn and uses her environment and resources effectively to support them. Her planning is thorough, enabling children to build on what they know and can do. Children also make choices as they decide what they want to do. The childminder is particularly skilled in supporting children's early literacy skills and developing their speech. She makes stories come to life, which engages children's imagination. She counts with children, developing their awareness of numbers. The childminder promotes children's physical skills as she encourages them to challenge themselves when using equipment to build their strength, coordination and balance.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder promotes children's emotional development successfully. She gets to know them well. She acts as a good role model showing children how to behave and promotes caring attitudes towards others. Everyday situations help children learn about how to stay safe and healthy. Children carry out tasks and care for themselves. They learn to use the toilet, eat with utensils and pour their own drinks. Meals are healthy and nutritious, and opportunities to be physically active are plentiful. The childminder organises resources and the environment well to promote children's all-round development.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are confident and keen to learn. They benefit because the childminder is enthusiastic and motivates them well. Children enjoy a range of different experiences and challenges, and make good progress. They develop the skills they need for future learning and school.
