protection. They are aware of the safeguarding procedures to follow, including how to report any welfare concerns about any child in their care.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always offer opportunities for younger children to engage more in a wider range of sensory activities to explore and investigate.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed interactions between the children and the childminder and assistant.  The inspector held discussions with the childminder at convenient times during the inspection.  The inspector viewed samples of written feedback from parents and spoke to them on the telephone.  The inspector viewed all areas of the home used for childminding.  The inspector sampled documents that the childminder uses to support her practice.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder evaluates her practice well. She seeks support from other professionals and attends training to help improve her provision. This enables her to effectively identify areas for improvement that enrich children's experiences. The childminder works well with parents. She shares information regularly, meaning children benefit from consistent routines and familiarity. The childminder, when needed, makes parents aware of other professional help. This supports parents and promotes positive outcomes for children. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder understands her responsibility to protect children from harm. The childminder supports her assistant well through training and encouragement so that they work consistently and positively together.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Through good initial assessments and conversations with parents, the childminder is clear about children's starting points to plan targeted activities in key areas of children's development. The childminder continues to observe children's progress and identifies their next steps well. Through continuous monitoring, the childminder is able to identify any areas of need immediately. This helps her and her assistant to ensure activities and their interaction challenge children. The quality of teaching is good and the childminder and assistant effectively support children's different levels of learning. They provide activities that spark children's interest to explore cause and effect and develop skills in readiness for early writing, for example, painting. Children make good progress in their communication and language. The childminder and her assistant introduce children to new words and initiate lots of discussion that develops children's thinking and talking skills.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children enjoy an affectionate and warm relationship with the childminder and her assistant. This contributes to their high levels of confidence and promotes their self-worth. Both the childminder and assistant are very effective in promoting children's emotional well-being and clearly understand children's individual needs. Care routines are sensitive and promote good hygiene. The childminder and her assistant teach children simple age- appropriate rules that they know and understand, for example, to share toys and take turns. This helps children to form positive relationships with others and, as a result, children behave well. The childminder and her assistant are very calm and consistent in their interaction and children confidently approach them for support and comfort. Visits to a local community group each day enable children to socialise and support their physical well-being well.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are happy and secure and make good progress. They are encouraged to be independent and gain skills that prepare them well for their next stages in learning.
