Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder does not know how to successfully use observation and assessment to identify children's starting points, track their progress and plan for the next steps in their learning.  The childminder does not always exchange clear information with parents and other early years providers about children's interests, needs and achievements. Therefore, a shared approach to successfully support children's learning and development is not fully established.  The childminder does not use thorough and accurate self-evaluation to monitor the quality of her provision, and to bring about positive changes for children that attend.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 Children are happy, self-confident and settled. They enjoy loving and affectionate relationships with the childminder.  The childminder provides a spacious and stimulating learning environment. Children make lots of choices about their play and learning. They happily explore their surroundings and show good levels of independence.  The childminder has forged good relationships with parents and they are pleased with the service that she provides.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 improve knowledge and understanding of how to use information gathered about children's needs, likes and achievements, in order to successfully assess each child's starting points, track their progress and shape learning experiences. 11/11/2015

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 exchange more precise information with parents and other early years providers to promote greater continuity in children's learning and gain a more accurate picture of what children know, like and can do  develop thorough self-evaluation so that weaknesses in practice are effectively identified and addressed, and the quality and effectiveness of the provision continues to improve.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector had a tour of the areas of the childminder's home used for childminding and observed children engaged in a variety of activities.  The inspector completed a joint observation with the childminder.  The inspector viewed evidence of the suitability of all adults living on the childminding premises.  The inspector looked at a sample of policies, training records and children's assessment records, and discussed the childminder's self-evaluation.  The inspector spoke to the childminder and children at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector took account of the views of some parents recorded on letters and questionnaires.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

The childminder has an adequate understanding of her legal responsibilities. The arrangements for safeguarding children are effective. Robust risk assessment ensures that the childminder's home and the resources used for childminding are safe. The childminder has attended some safeguarding training and knows what to do if she has any concerns about children's welfare. However, she is still not fully meeting the learning and development requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage. The childminder does not understand how to accurately identify and plan for the next steps in children's learning and development. The childminder is keen to raise the quality and effectiveness of her provision. Since the last inspection, she has received support from the local authority and has taken some action to address identified weaknesses. For instance, she now provides a better balance of adult-led and child-initiated play. She has also completed the required

progress checks for children aged between two and three years. The childminder has sought the views of parents and has a general overview of her strengths and weaknesses. However, her self-evaluation is not thorough enough to effectively identify and address all weaknesses, and drive the standard of care and education to good.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

Despite the childminder's childcare qualification and experience, the quality of her teaching is variable and not good enough to ensure children make the best possible progress. The childminder does not always exchange clear information with parents and other early years providers about what children know, like and can do. Also, her assessment of children's learning is not always accurate. Consequently, the childminder does not have precise information to successfully plan for the next steps in children's learning. Children's speaking skills are developing well. They eagerly recall past experiences and talk excitedly about things that interest them. The childminder listens to children's comments, models language and introduces new words. She also asks children questions and they respond to these with great thought and enthusiasm.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

Children's emotional and physical well-being are suitably promoted. The childminder is very kind and caring. She ensures that all children know that they are valued and cared about. Children learn how to keep themselves healthy as they participate in regular physical exercise and follow good hygiene routines. The childminder provides children with suitable guidance about her expectations for their behaviour. She encourages good manners and teaches children to show respect for people and property.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Children make steady progress from their starting points and are developing most of the key skills needed for school and future life. They have fun and eagerly participate in the many experiences readily available to them.
