This provision is good

 Teaching is good because the childminder and the assistant engage with the children well. They use observations effectively to ensure activities are shaped to the individual needs of each child.  The childminder and her assistant assess children's progress effectively and involve parents in supporting children's learning. As a result, children make good progress in their development.  Children show good levels of confidence as they independently select activities. Their learning is purposeful and reflects their interests.  Positive relationships with parents are well established. The childminder and the assistant listen to parents' views and help to shape the ongoing improvements of the provision.  The childminder and her assistant have a good understanding of safeguarding and child protection procedures which helps them to ensure that they keep children safe from harm.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always encourage young children to do enough things for themselves.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 encourage young children to learn to do more things for themselves.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector completed a joint observation with the childminder.  The inspector held a meeting with the childminder and looked at relevant documentation, such as policies and evidence of the suitability of adults living on the premises.  The inspector took account of the views of parents and carers from information included in the childminder's own parental survey.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder has a good understanding of the Early Years Foundation Stage requirements. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder regularly attends training and briefing sessions which ensures she has current knowledge with regards to safeguarding children. The childminder fully understands her responsibility to promote children's learning and development, and does this well. She implements good systems to monitor the rate at which children are progressing and identifies, and addresses any gaps in children's learning. The childminder accurately identifies her strengths and areas for further development through partnerships with other professionals and her assistant. They regularly meet with other childminders and early years consultants so that they can share good practice to evaluate their provision.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Children attend the provision regularly. They learn about diversity through celebrating different festivals from around the world. Young children learn early mathematical skills. They enjoy playing with shape sorters and begin to learn the names of shapes. This helps children to move on to their next stages of development, for example, learning to talk. Children are motivated to learn. The childminder and her assistant join in with children's play by sings nursery rhymes. Children's needs and interests are well met. The childminder carefully observes children and identifies their interests. For example, the childminder and the assistant play ball games with children because they know this is what they enjoy.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are well settled and behaviour is good. They make good use of the areas used for childminding. Children have strong emotional attachments with the childminder and the assistant. They have regular fresh air and physical exercise in the garden. For example, children enjoy racing with the childminder and her assistant. Children benefit from healthy, home-cooked meals and snacks. However, young children are not always encouraged to learn to do things for themselves. For example, they are not encouraged to feed themselves. Children learn about respecting others through sharing and being kind to each other. They also learn about the wider community. They enjoy trips to the local library and looking at different books. The childminder helps children to be prepared for school. They share stories and have positive conversations about moving on to school.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are working at typical levels of development for their age. The childminder regularly observes and evaluates their learning and tracks development in all aspects of their learning. Assessments are carried out to help identify next steps in learning. Parents are encouraged to continue children's learning at home. The childminder understands how to work with others to make sure all children receive the support they need.
