This provision is good
The childminder has a good understanding of how children learn and develop. She provides a good range of activities to promote learning in all areas. Children play in a child-friendly and inviting environment where they are able to explore freely. Children form warm, caring bonds with the childminder. She is kind and has a gentle and nurturing approach towards the children. This helps them to feel safe, emotionally secure and valued, which supports their well-being effectively. Children are protected well. The childminder has a good understanding of her role and responsibility to keep children safe. She knows the appropriate action to take if she has concerns about the welfare of a child in her care. The childminder forms successful partnerships with parents. She regularly updates parents on their children's progress and invites them to share information about their children's achievements and development.
p.1
This provision is good
The experienced childminder is committed to improving her practice through attending training. She shares ideas and good practice with local childminders in order to maintain the high quality of her service.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
Children do not always have enough opportunities to extend their early literacy and mathematical skills. The childminder does not always promote children's ability to solve problems independently.
p.1
What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed activities in the indoor learning environment where children play and viewed all areas of the home used for childminding purposes. The inspector spoke with the childminder and children at appropriate times during the inspection. The inspector observed an activity and evaluated the quality of teaching with the childminder. The inspector looked at children's records, planning and a range of other documentation, including policies and procedures and evidence of the suitability of the childminder and other household members. The inspector took account of the views of parents in written testimonials.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The childminder is vigilant and has effective safeguarding practices. Children are developing a good understanding of how to keep themselves safe. For example, they practise crossing roads safely. The childminder regularly reviews children's progress, and any identified gaps are quickly addressed. She works closely with other early years settings that children attend to ensure a clear and consistent approach to children's learning and development. She regularly obtains the views of children and parents to identify areas for improvement. Written comments from parents confirm they are very happy with the care the childminder provides. They value the childminder highly and are very pleased with their child's progress.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
Teaching is good. The childminder completes regular observations and assessments of children. She uses this information to plan activities that are tailored to children's individual needs and interests. Children display good imaginations as they play with toy trains. The childminder extends their play by joining in and supporting children's communication and language skills. The childminder repeats and extends children's language and offers a narrative as the toy trains travel around the track. Children's emerging mathematical understanding is promoted well. The childminder skilfully weaves counting and discussions about size and shape into activities. However, opportunities for children to build further on their developing mathematical and literacy skills are not consistently available. For example, there are few resources that reflect numbers or words for children to use independently in their self-chosen play. Children are motivated learners

and able to concentrate well during their activities. However, occasionally the childminder does not provide children with enough time to try to solve problems independently and intervenes too quickly.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children are happy, relaxed and show high levels of confidence and self-esteem in their play. The childminder ensures children are well supported in the move from home to her care through settling-in visits. Children behave well as the childminder is a good role model. She provides constant praise and encouragement and is sensitive to children's regular routines and care needs. The childminder encourages children's growing understanding of a healthy lifestyle. Children learn the importance of healthy hygiene routines and talk with confidence about removing the germs from their hands. Children enjoy healthy snacks and have daily opportunities to play outside and get fresh air and exercise.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children have many opportunities to make their own choices in their play and develop their self-care skills. Younger children are supported to develop sharing and turn taking during their play. Children make good progress in all areas of learning and are well prepared for school.
