p.1

3

Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder does not use the information she gathers on each child to assess their learning needs accurately. She does not effectively identify their next steps in learning. Activities are not always suitably planned to challenge children sufficiently or further their knowledge and skills.  The childminder does not find out as much as possible about what children know and can do when they first start, in order to accurately plan for children's individual learning needs as swiftly as possible.  Self-evaluation processes fail to clearly highlight areas for development, in order to make further improvements to the quality of teaching and learning, and improve outcomes for children.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 Children are happy. They share warm relationships with the childminder. She tailors the settling-in procedures to match individual children's needs and finds out as much as possible about their likes and dislikes. This helps children to settle in quickly.  The childminder supports young children to develop their self-care skills. They learn to wash and dry their hands, and feed themselves independently at snack time.  The premises are safe and secure. Risk assessments are carried out regularly on the premises and for outings.  Partnerships with parents are good. Information is shared on a regular basis and parents provide positive feedback in their completed questionnaires.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 ensure information gained from observations is used to clearly identify children's next steps in learning and plan activities that extend children's learning based on their individual needs, interests and stage of development. 30/11/2015

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 gather more information about what children already know and can do when they first start and take this into account when planning activities  identify priorities for development, clearly focusing on the delivery of the learning and development requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage and monitoring the impact this has on the progress children make in their learning and development.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector completed a joint observation with the childminder.  The inspector looked at relevant documentation, such as the childminder's self- evaluation and evidence of the suitability of household members.  The inspector took account of the views of parents expressed in writing.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

The childminder's knowledge of her responsibilities to meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage requires improvement. She reflects on the quality of her provision and keeps up to date through training and meetings with other childminders. However, she does not identify clear targets for future development. This limits the drive for improvement. In addition, the childminder does not focus sufficiently on the implementation of the learning and development requirements or the impact this has on children's progress. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. For example, the childminder has appropriate procedures to follow should she have a concern about the welfare of a child in her care.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The childminder provides a wide range of interesting activities and experiences to support children's learning and development. However, the quality of teaching is variable. The childminder plays with the children and uses a range of teaching strategies to support their learning. Children's communication and language skills are suitably developed as they enjoy stories and songs. The childminder introduces new words during activities to develop their vocabulary. She regularly observes children and provides activities based on their interests. However, the childminder does not clearly identify children's next steps in learning. As a result, planned activities are not based on their individual needs and stage of development. The childminder has systems in place to monitor children's progress. She gathers a wide range of information from parents about children's individual needs and interests when they start. However, she does not find out enough about what children

already know and can do, to help her to identify children's starting points quickly.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

The childminder takes children to local toddler groups where they develop their social skills. Although the childminder does not always use her knowledge of children's next steps effectively, she does teach children to share and take turns. She is a good role model, encouraging children's independence and teaching children to handle toys and resources with care. Children are praised for their efforts, raising their self-esteem. They display appropriate behaviour. Resources and activities that promote equality and diversity have been increased since the last inspection. The childminder encourages children to be polite and respectful of others. Children learn to take appropriate risks as they engage in physical activities or play on climbing equipment outside. The childminder provides healthy snacks and children grow their own fruit and vegetables in the garden. She uses these opportunities to develop their understanding of healthy eating.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Children make some progress in their learning and development. Older children learn some key skills ready for school. They are happy and safe in the childminder's care.
