This provision is good
Parents are extremely positive about the childminder's practice. She is very experienced at understanding and implementing the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage well. This has a positive impact on the overall effectiveness of her provision. The childminder forms strong relationships with children in a calm, interesting and safe environment. Her constant praise and encouragement throughout activities and routines enable children to develop their self-esteem and become confident learners. The childminder has an excellent understanding of each child's needs, and she tailors her planning and teaching to reflect them. Her good teaching skills and effective monitoring ensure that children continually make good progress and develop the skills they need to be ready for school. The childminder provides a good range of interesting and stimulating activities that engage children and build on their interests. Children are eager to join in activities,

explore the home, garden and allotment, and talk about what they have discovered. The childminder has an excellent understanding of safeguarding children and knows what to do in the event of concerns about a child in her care. She ensures she receives regular training and updates about how to safeguard the children in her care.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder does not use fully effective systems to gather information from parents about children's starting points and learning needs to inform planning from the outset. Occasionally, the childminder misses opportunities to promote children's mathematical language.

What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

Inspection activities
The inspector observed activities and interactions between the childminder and the children. The inspector looked at children's information, attendance and development records. The inspector had ongoing discussions with the childminder at appropriate times during the inspection. The inspector discussed the childminder's evaluation, assessment and planning methods, and her range of policies and procedures. The inspector invited the childminder to carry out a joint observation.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The experienced childminder safeguards children effectively. She is well motivated and keeps up to date with current childcare issues by attending courses and network meetings, and through independent research. These developments have had a significant impact since the last inspection. For example, she is committed to building positive relationships with other providers to ensure continuity and consistency for all children. She has strong links with local teachers and playgroups, and shares information about children's needs and achievements. She has recently taken a nutrition and health course to increase her knowledge to promote a strong ethos of healthy living to benefit children. The childminder uses self-evaluation effectively to reflect on her practice and identify areas to develop. These often result from the children's fascinations and family interests, such as growing the food they eat. The childminder maintains all her documentation in
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
Teaching is good, and some is outstanding. The childminder uses her secure knowledge of how children learn to judge when to intervene in children's spontaneous play to extend their learning. She identifies when a child is not achieving as well as possible and she knows what to do to provide any additional support they need. The childminder promotes children's mathematical development well using appropriate resources. However, there is a minor weakness in her teaching to develop children's skills further. For example, she did not seize all opportunities to count and talk about shapes with younger children during mealtimes or count when picking beans, peas and blackberries. The childminder is particularly skilled at developing younger children's language and physical skills during their play. As a result, all children, including those who speak English as an additional language, make very good progress in these areas.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children are very happy and emotionally secure in the childminder's care and she builds trusting relationships with them. This helps her to meet their emotional needs very well and support their overall well-being effectively. She is a natural communicator with children and organises purposeful activities and interesting outings to ensure they have fun together. Children learn to care for the environment and treat each other with kindness and respect. The childminder is an excellent role model and praises children constantly for their achievements no matter how small. She uses age-appropriate techniques to ensure children develop good social skills for the future. She helps children to develop their understanding of how to keep themselves safe and healthy.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children make good progress in relation to their starting points. The childminder gathers information about their backgrounds, home routines and individual needs. However, she does not consistently engage all parents in the initial assessment of children's learning to inform planning from the outset. Nevertheless, the childminder is enthusiastic about working closely with parents. She has strong relationships with them, sharing ideas to help their children learn at home. This promotes continuity and good outcomes for children.
