The setting meets legal requirements for early years settings

p.1

This provision is good

 The childminder supports children's speech and language development very well. She engages children in thoughtful discussions about things that they are interested in. This helps them learn new words and converse well with others.  The childminder knows children well and what they can do. She uses this information to plan successful activities to help them make good progress from their starting points on entry.  Children form secure attachments to the childminder and this promotes their emotional well-being and confidence.  The childminder has effective systems in place for protecting children and keeping them safe from harm. She has considered how to deal with any situation regarding their safety and the steps she would take to ensure they remain safe.  The childminder provides clear guidance to children about their behaviour. As a result, children learn about acceptable behaviour and what is expected of them.

p.1

This provision is good

 Partnerships with parents are strong and parents are very supportive of the childminder's efforts to provide their children with a high-quality learning experience. The childminder works closely with parents to achieve this.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder misses opportunities at times to extend the range of resources available to encourage children to make their own choices over play and extend their learning further.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 provide children with wider access to a range of resources so that they can choose more freely the direction of their own play and thus extend their opportunities for learning further.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector reviewed activities in the childminder's home and observed interactions between the childminder and children.  The inspector carried out a joint observation with the childminder.  The inspector held a meeting with the childminder about her practice and sampled documents, such as policies and procedures.  The inspector toured the premises used for childminding and reviewed the safety measures in place.

who attend. This is good

The childminder has a very good understanding of the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage and how young children learn through play. The childminder provides children with stimulating and enjoyable activities, which are suitable for their age and stage of development. For example, children learn about numbers and counting through simple sorting activities using pasta. Children have access to books and the childminder teaches them about letters and their sounds as well as rhyming phrases, which supports their literacy skills. For older children, the childminder extends their literacy skills well. For example, she helps them to make phonics books, where they learn to write lists of words starting with a particular sound. These activities prepare children well for school as they learn to read and write. The childminder has effective assessment procedures in place. Therefore, she closely monitors children's progress from their starting points and shares

this information with parents regularly.

p.3

good

The childminder has robust systems in place to ensure that children are well cared for and kept safe. Children are confident learners as they actively explore their environment. This shows that they are comfortable and feel a sense of belonging. For example, children move furniture around to sit on at lunchtime and wash their hands without being asked. The childminder develops children's awareness of keeping healthy, for example, they enjoy singing songs about handwashing with the childminder as they complete this routine. Children have access to a large outdoor area where they can play on large and small equipment to develop their physical skills. Trips to the local parks and playgroups provide the childminder with opportunities to teach children about potential dangers, including road safety. The childminder follows this up with activities based on a safety theme to increase their awareness further.

p.3

provision is good

The childminder is keen to develop her practice and carries out self-reviews, which also involve parents, to identify areas of strength and development. As a result, she attends regular training to develop her knowledge and understanding of early years and to provide a better quality experience for children. For example, she has attended recent training on how to provide more stimulating creative experiences for children. Consequently, she now resourcefully uses everyday items during art activities to develop children's creative skills. The childminder is very aware of the need to work in partnership with other schools that children attend. Therefore, where possible, she requests information from schools about children's next steps to complement their learning when in her care.
