The setting meets legal requirements for early years settings

p.1

This provision is good

 The childminder provides good quality ongoing interactions throughout children's play and routines, which support their language development and all-round learning successfully.  The childminder follows children's interests effectively, enabling them to learn at their own pace through activities that they enjoy.  Children enjoy exploring a good range of resources indoors and outdoors, which provide opportunities to develop skills in all areas of learning.  Children are settled and relaxed; they clearly enjoy good relationships with the childminder.  The childminder supports children to adopt a positive approach to healthy lifestyles through outdoor play, food preparation and good hygiene procedures.  The childminder provides good levels of supervision and has a clear understanding of safeguarding procedures to help keep children safe.  The childminder evaluates her practice routinely and has a clear idea of her strengths

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Although the childminder supports children well she does not always make the best use of all opportunities to extend their learning further through additional challenges.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

 enhance the already good support for children's learning by extending challenges and asking questions that encourage children to think more deeply.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed activities indoors and outdoors.  The inspector talked to the childminder about different aspects of her practice, including an evaluation of an activity.  The inspector sampled documentation, including letters from parents, children's development records, the childminder's training records and self-evaluation form.

who attend. This is good

Children are able to explore freely and can choose to play indoors or outdoors. They develop early literacy skills, for example, as they make marks outdoors with different materials. Children learn about mathematical concepts, such as weight, through activities planned by the childminder. Younger children become confident in exploring their physical skills, as the childminder supports them to explore the play environment. The childminder frequently narrates children's play, recalling their previous experiences and using explanations. This helps children to make connections in their learning and absorb new information. However, the childminder sometimes misses opportunities to challenge children's thinking even further through more careful questioning. The childminder follows a comprehensive system to observe and assess children's progress and to plan for their individual needs. This is successful in ensuring that children are making at least good

progress to prepare them well for their next stages of learning and for school.

good

Children show that they feel confident. They are motivated and engage well in their play. Children learn to talk about the similarities and differences between people through games and discussion with the childminder. They learn about sensible safety procedures, such as coming down the stairs carefully. The childminder follows hygienic procedures for nappy changing for younger children, ensuring that they remain comfortable. Children are able to play outdoors routinely whatever the weather, as the childminder provides appropriate clothing and activities. They learn to manage using a lunchbox, which helps to develop their independence to prepare them for their future move into school. The childminder takes children to the local market and butchers, and orders a weekly organic fruit and vegetable box, to help children learn about good nutrition.

p.3

provision is good

The childminder has a good understanding of her responsibilities and meets requirements. She is aware of ratio requirements and demonstrates her ability to meet children's individual needs on the occasions she exceeds these to provide continuity of care for siblings, as permitted. The childminder provides parents with a wide variety of information through daily discussions, diaries, records and social networking to keep them well informed about their children's activities and progress. She works in partnership with other settings children attend to promote good continuity in their care and learning. Since the last inspection, the childminder has enhanced outdoor play by developing resources using ideas from social networking. She is planning to improve her website to enhance information available for parents.
