p.1

This provision is good

 The childminder observes and assesses children's levels of achievement and challenges them effectively so that they make good progress.  The childminder helps parents to share what they know about their children and keeps them informed about children's learning. Effective partnerships with other early years providers ensure continuity for children.  Children's emotional security is addressed well. The childminder's relationships with them are good and children are happy and settled.  Children are safeguarded because the childminder is aware of her responsibilities to protect them from abuse and neglect. She successfully identifies and minimises risks in her home and garden.  Children's creativity is supported well by the childminder. They explore a good variety of media and materials.  Older children express themselves confidently. Younger children express themselves through facial expression, gesture and the sound of their voices. The childminder

interprets their needs well.  Documentation required for the safe and efficient management of the provision and to ensure that the needs of all children are met, is well maintained and implemented.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder sometimes helps children with simple tasks that they are capable of trying and completing for themselves.

 extend encouragement for children to attempt and complete simple tasks for themselves in support of their growing independence.

who attend. This is good

The childminder supports children effectively so that they make good progress and develop skills in readiness for school. Children's mathematical learning is supported well. They confidently count wild flowers as they place these into the 'sunshine bottles' they are making. Children extend their knowledge of colour, shape and size while they confidently describe the sparkly bits that they put into their bottles. They patiently watch and wait while the childminder adds water, screws on lids and secures the lids with tape. They know that they will then be able to shake the bottles. However, the childminder has not considered the further learning opportunities of involving them in these tasks. Younger children's sensory experiences are supported well by the childminder. They explore the texture of the remaining flowers as they make a collage. Older children squeeze the flowers and they notice a change to the colour of their fingers. The childminder extends

this exploration. She supports the children to find out what happens as they press the flowers inside folded white paper. The childminder encourages all children to be creative. Older children choose to paint with brushes and younger children dip their fingertips into the paint. They are intrigued at the marks they make on their paper.

good

The childminder creates a warm and welcoming environment. Children's personal, social and emotional development is addressed successfully. They behave well and understand expectations for behaviour, such as sharing and taking turns. Children are confident and keen to be involved in activities. The childminder boosts their self-esteem by praising their efforts and achievements. Children's good health is promoted well. They eat healthy food and the childminder encourages them to be physically active. The outdoor area is used effectively for play activities and children gain physical skills while they use challenging equipment at the local park. Children learn to manage their self-care needs.

p.3

provision is good

The childminder's home is safe and secure and she is aware of her responsibilities to supervise children and protect them from harm. Necessary suitability checks for family members have been completed. She monitors the practice of her assistant effectively on occasions when they work together. The childminder meets children's welfare needs successfully because she and her assistant keep their first-aid knowledge up to date. She ensures that she is aware of current Northamptonshire child protection referral procedures. In order to review and improve her provision, good practice ideas are shared between the childminder and staff who work in the local nursery. The partnerships with parents are good. The childminder is successful in obtaining information about each child's individual needs from parents and in agreeing with them how they can work together to meet these needs. They share positive views about the provision in questionnaires.
