The setting meets legal requirements for early years settings

p.1

This provision is good

 The childminder continuously updates her knowledge and skills which results in good early years experiences for the children.  The childminder reflects on her practice and the provision in order to make changes which benefit the children.  Children are engaged in a range of interesting activities and make good progress from their starting points.  Children are independent and learn to take care of their own needs with encouragement and support.  The quality of teaching is good which means children are given time to think and problem solve for themselves.  Children's well-being is good because they feel happy and secure due to a good relationship with the childminder.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not fully engage parents in their children's learning and assessment at the setting or at home.  The childminder does not always extend children's learning by encouraging them to follow a task through or offering new ideas.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 extend opportunities to engage parents in their children's learning and assessment both at the setting and in the home  enrich children's experiences and activities to inspire new learning and build upon their existing knowledge.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector viewed the areas used for childminding and held discussions with the childminder and assistant throughout the inspection.  The inspector observed the children playing indoors and outside and carried out joint observations with both the childminder and assistant.  The inspector looked at a range of documents, including children's learning records, planning documentation, risk assessments and evidence of training.  The inspector read parents' views which had been recorded and also the childminder's questionnaires.

p.2

who attend. This is good

The childminder works closely with the parents to gather accurate starting points for the children which are then used to plan a broad range of activities. Children enjoy playing outdoors, experimenting to see what will happen when water is added to the sand. The childminder supports children well with creative activities where they show good concentration and follow their own ideas. The children develop good thinking skills because the childminder asks questions which challenge them and allows them time to think carefully. Mathematical skills and language are well supported during the children's play and they learn how to count and use words to describe weight and measure. However, the childminder sometimes misses opportunities to introduce new ideas and concepts during her interactions with the children. Children are helped to prepare for writing at school as the childminder works on developing pencil control, by building up

good

The childminder spends time settling new children in to the provision which results in good relationships. Children are happy and enjoy their time at the childminder's. There are lots of opportunities for the children to develop their physical skills in the outdoor area and children also enjoy other outdoor activities. The childminder encourages children to be independent in the environment and they learn how to do things for themselves, which raises their self-esteem and confidence. The childminder encourages the children to stay safe by setting sensible boundaries and explaining what could happen to develop their understanding. The childminder demonstrates knowledge of how to keep children safe in the setting and understands child protection procedures.

p.3

provision is good

The childminder demonstrates understanding the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage through her practice. She strives to keep her knowledge up to date and always attends the local authority network meetings to support development of the setting. For example, ideas from assessment training are now being used effectively to collect evidence of children's progress. The childminder's assistant jointly attends training courses to ensure their practice is consistent and they discuss ways to improve their teaching together. The childminder evaluates the provision regularly and identifies priorities, showing how this will be achieved. Parents suggested more outdoor activities as an improvement so the childminder redeveloped the outdoor area and introduced more activities. However, the childminder could work more closely with parents to support their children's learning at home, following on and supporting the activities completed at the

setting. Strategies could also be developed to encourage parental contributions to the children's learning journeys.
