p.1

This provision is good

 The childminder has a good range of resources and encourages children to make independent choices in their play and learning.  The childminder works very closely with parents to get to know children and their starting points. Observations, assessments and planning are effective as she takes into account children's individual needs.  Children make good progress in their development. This is because the childminder is fully committed to supporting children to reach their full learning potential.  Children form strong relationships with the childminder. This means she meets children's individual needs very well and promotes their emotional well-being.  The childminder demonstrates a secure understanding of safeguarding. She is knowledgeable about the procedures to follow for reporting child protection issues that may raise cause for concern.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always allow enough time for children to see activities through to the end. As a result, children sometimes get distracted and lose concentration.  The childminder misses opportunities to extend children's early writing skills during play routines.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

who attend. This is good

The childminder has a secure knowledge of the learning and development requirements for the Early Years Foundation Stage. The childminder is attentive and she sensitively supports children's individual needs. She uses effective teaching skills as she talks to children. This promotes their understanding as she asks questions to make them think. For example, 'what do we need to put on before we go into the garden?' or 'what are sofas used for?' Children with English as an additional language have good opportunities to develop their communication and language skills. The childminder supports them by using key words and bilingual toys, which parents bring in. She supports older children extremely well in their literacy development of understanding letters and sounds. As a result, children identify their names and begin to read during play routines. This fully supports their learning and prepares them well for school.

p.3

good

The childminder provides a safe and welcoming environment for children where they settle quickly. Parents comment that children are happy and that the childminder takes children on outings and bakes with them. The childminder provides healthy snacks for children and fresh drinking water is readily available. Children show high levels of independence as they wash their hands, feed themselves and use the toilet. All children greatly enjoy visits to parks and children's centres where they confidently use a variety of outdoor play equipment. This helps to promote their physical well-being. Children regularly participate in evacuation drills so that they know what to do and how to behave in an emergency. These experiences positively contribute to children developing a sense of danger and knowing how to keep themselves safe.

p.3

provision is good

The childminder has a secure knowledge of the safeguarding and welfare requirements for the Early Years Foundation Stage. She has addressed the previous recommendations from the last inspection well. This has a positive impact on children's well-being, and their learning and development. The childminder is committed to continual development to improve outcomes for children. For example, she attends training courses. A recent course on child exploitation and online safety has had a great impact on the older children's awareness of internet safety. The childminder makes ongoing improvements as part of her self-evaluation process. The childminder maintains continuity for children's learning and care due to the effective partnerships she has with parents, other professionals and local schools.
