The setting does not meet legal requirements for early years settings

p.1

This provision is inadequate

 The childminder does not demonstrate a sound understanding of the procedures to follow to safeguard children if an allegation is made against her or a member of her household.  The childminder fails to have knowledge of space requirements for the different ages of children attending. This means that she cares for a number of children in the early years age range within a limited amount of indoor space. This inhibits children's play.  The childminder does not obtain detailed information from parents when children first start to enable her to promptly plan learning experiences to help children make good progress.  The childminder fails to use observations effectively to inform her planning and to make plans for children's further learning with parents. She fails to identify the actual learning that children achieve or review whether what is observed falls in line with age expectations.  The childminder does not effectively evaluate the service she provides to identify

weaknesses in practice and improve outcomes for children and her knowledge.  The childminder does not offer children sufficient opportunities to express their creativity and ideas, particularly within the home setting, as she finds space is limited.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The childminder is attentive and caring in her engagement with the children. This helps them to form a close bond and ensure they are engaged in activities.  The childminder suitably supports children with their language development.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage the provider must:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 develop an understanding of and organise premises and equipment that meets the needs of children, particularly regarding the provision of indoor space to meet the requirements for the ages of children attending  improve understanding of procedures to safeguard children regarding the action to take in the event of an allegation being made against you or a member of the household  improve planning for children's next steps in their learning by providing opportunities for parents to share their own observations about children's progress at home when they start attending  develop knowledge of assessment to evaluate observations and identify learning outcomes to help determine the next steps in children's learning journey, and to assess if the learning observed is in line with expectations.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 improve opportunities for children to express their ideas and creativity in the home setting to promote their individual development and interests  develop an effective process for continuous reflection to build on strengths and fully identify and address weaknesses in practice to drive improvement and improve outcomes for children.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder interacting with children to support their learning and provide care.  The inspector spoke to the childminder throughout the inspection and interacted with the children when appropriate.  The inspector sampled records maintained by the childminder about children in her care, policies and procedures shared with parents, and viewed feedback from parents.  The inspector looked at a sample of systems the childminder uses to assess children's developmental progress, and how parents are engaged in supporting their child's development.  The inspector discussed the methods the childminder uses to develop her knowledge of childminding further and how she uses reflective practice.

p.2

who attend. This is inadequate

Children are not supported to make robust progress in their learning and gain the skills they need to prepare them for school. The childminder makes some observations of the children but does not use these to inform forward planning for each child. In addition, parents are not approached at the time of their children starting to gather information about where children are in their learning and development. The childminder carries out the required progress checks for two-year-olds. However, as with her observations, she does not use her findings to identify if children are developing in line with age expectations. The childminder introduces simple discussions, stories and pictures to develop children's language and communication skills. Children learn to count and name colours through routine play. The childminder talks about the activities children enjoy, such as offering building blocks and transport vehicles. However, she does not extend this

further for children who she knows enjoy messy and creative play. Children see positive images of diversity and develop their awareness of the local community.

p.3

inadequate

Children have daily fresh air and exercise when they play in the community open spaces or outdoor play areas of groups they visit. However, the available indoor play space limits children's exploration and ability to investigate a full range of resources and activities. This hinders their all-round development. In addition, the gap identified in the childminder's safeguarding knowledge means that children's well-being is not fully assured. The childminder provides children with a variety of fruits to snack on and reminds children to take regular drinks of water in the warm weather. Children play in a clean environment and learn to be safe through the reminders the childminder provides in the home and when out in the community. Children behave well as they are closely supervised and taught to share toys and consider the needs of others.

p.3

provision is inadequate

The childminder's knowledge and understanding of the Early Years Foundation Stage is not adequate. She fails to identify and acknowledge space requirements for the children attending. The childminder has attended safeguarding training to help protect children in her care. However, she does not have an adequate knowledge of the procedures to follow if an allegation is made against her or adults in her household. The childminder has only recently begun to evaluate her provision with the assistance of the local authority. However, she has not identified the gaps in her knowledge of the requirements or considered how to improve learning outcomes for children. The childminder maintains records as required, including children's attendance records. She communicates with parents daily at handovers to share basic information about their child's day.
