p.1

This provision is outstanding

 The childminder makes high-quality assessments of children's learning and development and uses these to plan exceptional activities to extend their learning and to prepare them for school. For example, children are currently nurturing caterpillars through the lifecycle to butterflies and enjoy making dinner for dolls in the mud kitchen.  The childminder works in extremely close partnership with parents and children's nursery teachers. They review, assess and plan for children's progress together. As a result, children receive consistent learning support between their different settings.  Children's welfare is exceptionally well safeguarded. The childminder is highly secure in her knowledge and understanding of the procedures to follow if she is concerned about a child's welfare. She carries out regular risk assessments that very effectively minimise accidents and keep children safe on outings.  The childminder is exceptionally well-organised and professional. She has thorough and

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed children's play and learning indoors and in the garden, and involved the childminder in this process.  The inspector discussed the childminder's practice with her and the impact of her teaching methods.  The inspector looked at children's progress records and other documentation relating to safeguarding, and children's health and well-being.  The inspector sought and took account of parents' views.

who attend. This is outstanding

Children are extremely happy and make outstanding progress in all aspects of their learning and development. The childminder skilfully interacts with children by asking questions that encourage their thinking skills and creativity. She repeats words and sounds and models experimental play which they copy. The childminder notes children's interests and builds on these. For example, pre-school children are in the process of designing a structure to represent a house of brick, sticks and hay so they can act out their current favourite fairy tale. This focus on pigs is well received by young toddlers who have learned to link the 'oink' sound to the word 'pig'. They show great excitement when the childminder reaches the point of a well-known rhyme, when they know they will be tickled. They had enormous fun with the childminder experimenting with cornflour, water and food colouring, and making ponds for ducks and piglets to bathe in.

outstanding

Children form a strong attachment to the childminder and firm friendships with each other, which particularly pleases parents. The childminder lays firm foundations for children to adopt healthy and safe lifestyle habits. She teaches fire safety by organising emergency evacuation practices and engaging children in pretend play. The childminder stays near to, rather than holds, children when they attempt climbing challenges. This approach ensures their safety while still teaching them to judge and manage their own safety. The childminder involves children in growing, preparing and making healthy food. She makes playing in the rain and snow fun. Children have great fun racing against each other on pedal-free toy vehicles which help develop balance, co-ordination, spatial and speed awareness. The childminder successfully teaches children to dress and feed themselves, and manage their own personal hygiene. This prepares them well for school.

p.3

provision is outstanding

The childminder's knowledge and understanding of the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage is excellent. She is highly proactive in identifying and targeting her own professional development needs. Since the last inspection the childminder has achieved a qualification at Level 3 in early years childcare and education and attended numerous training courses and conferences. She uses various early years publications, childminding colleagues, parents and the local authority advisors to help her evaluate the effectiveness of her provision. The childminder makes excellent use of what she learns from these sources to improve her practice and outcomes for children. For example, provision for outdoor play is inspirational. Strategies for supporting children learning more than one language have been her key focus, although these are not fully refined.
