The setting meets legal requirements for early years settings

p.1

This provision is good

 The childminder has a good understanding of the learning and development requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage. She uses good interactions and teaching skills throughout children's play and activities. Consequently, she successfully promotes their learning and they make good progress in all areas.  The childminder demonstrates a positive attitude towards developing her practice. She regularly updates her training to improve her skills and enhance learning outcomes for all children.  An in-depth understanding of her responsibilities and child protection procedures means the childminder confidently keeps children safe. She is fully aware of what to do if she has concerns about a child in her care.  The childminder develops positive relationships with parents and shares information about children's welfare needs. She works in partnership with parents and other settings children attend to provide continuity in their care.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always gather information from parents about their children's learning when they first attend. Therefore, the childminder is unable to plan their progression fully from the outset.  Although the childminder has a variety of books, they are not easily accessible to children throughout the day. Therefore, the childminder misses some opportunities to promote their early literacy development and enjoyment of books fully.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 strengthen the process for gathering information from parents concerning their children's development when they first attend, to plan their progression from the outset  extend children's early literacy skills and enjoyment of books further by making books more accessible throughout the day.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the children at play indoors.  The inspector carried out a joint observation with the childminder.  The inspector sampled a range of paperwork, such as policies, children's files and risk assessments.  The inspector discussed the provision with the childminder and the children at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector gathered parents' views from comments made in children's records.

p.2

who attend. This is good

Children take part in a good range of interesting activities and outings, which cover all areas of learning. The childminder listens perceptively to children during activities to guide and extend their learning. For example, children enjoyed a play dough activity. They discussed what they were doing and used cutters to shape the dough. The childminder encouraged children to identify the animals they cut out and discussed features of the natural world. The childminder cleverly introduced mathematical language like 'bigger' and 'smaller', and counted animal features. Children share the resources well and learn to take turns. This helps to develop their social skills. As a result, children are well prepared to attend other settings, such as school or nursery. The quality of teaching is good and children progress well. However, the childminder does not always fully promote children's enjoyment of books as they are stored out of sight and are not easy for them to access.

p.3

good

The childminder works closely with parents to ensure she meets the emerging needs of the children. She collects information from parents about children's interests and care needs before they start. However, she does not always request detailed information about children's learning and development. Therefore, she is not able to focus her planning fully on children's initial learning needs from the outset. Children learn about healthy lifestyles because the childminder teaches them through their play. She ensures that the children receive regular outdoor activities that promote exercise, such as going to parks and exploring the local area. She has a clear understanding of the importance of talking to children about their experiences outside the setting and values what they say. This supports their confidence and emotional security and helps children to develop high self- esteem, which motivates their learning and development.

p.3

provision is good

The childminder demonstrates a positive approach to self-evaluation. She works closely with the local childminding group to monitor her practice. As a result, she has a good understanding of her areas for improvement. In addition, she has addressed the recommendations raised at her last inspection. For example, she has increased her resources promoting equality and awareness of other cultures and communities. The childminder's inclusive approach helps her meet the individual needs of every child who attends.
