p.1

This provision is good

 Children enjoy the wide variety of interesting experiences the childminder plans for them. This supports their development well and they make good progress in all areas of learning in preparation for their move to school.  Children are extremely happy and well settled in the childminder's care. She fosters exceptionally warm, trusting and respectful relationships with them, which effectively promotes their personal and social development.  The childminder has a strong commitment to safeguarding children. She has a clear understanding of the procedures to follow in the event of child protection concerns.  The childminder provides regular opportunities for children to participate in small tasks where they learn to take care of some of their own care needs. As a result, children develop the confidence to have a go, which supports their growing independence.  The childminder provides a secure environment for children to play and learn. She

regularly reviews her thorough risk assessments of her home and planned outings to help keep children safe.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not give children enough opportunities to see written words and symbols in their learning environment or during activities to promote their early reading skills further.  Although children enjoy activities in the garden, the childminder does not provide a wider range of resources to encourage their early writing skills and imaginative play.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

 provide more opportunities for children to see written words and symbols in the environment to help extend their early reading skills  extend opportunities outdoors for children to play imaginatively and practise their early writing skills.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching and children's learning, and the resources available.  The inspector spoke with the childminder and children at suitable times during the inspection.  The inspector sampled a range of documentation, including children's learning records, policies and risk assessments.  The inspector took account of the views of parents through letters.

p.2

who attend. This is good

The childminder is fully aware of the individual needs of the children in her care and plans activities that interest and stimulate children. She extends their learning through routine discussion. For example, she encourages a younger child to explore the texture of pasta, and challenges an older child to count. This helps all children make good progress in their learning. The childminder works closely with parents and other settings children attend, which ensures continuity for children to meet their needs. However, there are sometimes fewer opportunities for children to understand the significance of written words during their play and in the environment to extend their early reading skills. The childminder routinely speaks to children so they hear the correct pronunciation of sounds. She makes good use of questioning and responds well to their responses. Consequently, children are confident communicators. The outdoor play area does not always contain a broad range of

resources to encourage children's imaginative play and exploration of early writing and marks using different resources.

p.3

outstanding

The childminder is an excellent role model to the children. She is extremely calm and enthusiastic, and responds very well to their needs. Children respond extremely positively when the childminder celebrates their efforts and achievements, such as when requesting 'high fives', which builds their self-esteem exceptionally well. The childminder expertly encourages children to be considerate towards one another and to use good manners. This successfully extends their personal, social and emotional development. Children are physically active during outings and when playing in the garden, which promotes healthy lifestyles. The childminder involves children in regular fire drills and teaches them about road safety, such as the need to wait for her at the end of the garden before going to the car. This means they gain a strong understanding of how to manage their own safety.

p.3

provision is good

The childminder has a good understanding of her responsibility to meet the Early Years Foundation Stage requirements. She closely monitors children's learning to ensure that they all make good progress. The childminder keeps up to date with legislation and shares good practice ideas with other childcare providers during regular network meetings. For instance, how best to promote and support children's understanding of healthy diets. This develops the childminder's knowledge and skills further to improve her practice for the benefit of the children. Effective self-evaluation systems allow the childminder to identify and address areas for development, for example, to provide gardening activities to extend children's understanding of the natural world.
