The setting meets legal requirements for early years settings

p.1

This provision is good

 The childminder talks to children consistently during their play and uses appropriate questions that make them think for themselves and solve problems. This supports their communication skills effectively.  The childminder is attentive to the children during activities. This encourages and extends their interest and their participation in play.  Relationships with parents and other professionals involved in children's care are good. A three-way flow of information enables the childminder, parents and pre-schools to work together. This has a positive impact on children's learning and development.  The childminder has effectively addressed previous recommendations. She completes online training and attends local childminder groups to extend her knowledge further. This helps her to more effectively promote children's safety, learning and development.  The childminder promotes children's safety at all times, and identifies and minimises

risks within the home, garden and on outings. She has a good knowledge of child protection procedures and is confident about what to do if she has a concern about a child's welfare.  Robust hygiene practices help to ensure children's good health and prevent the spread of infection. Children learn about the importance of good hygiene procedures.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always provide opportunities around her learning environments to support children's developing early literacy skills.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 strengthen children's opportunities to see words within the environment to help them to understand that print carries meaning.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed activities and daily routines during the visit.  The inspector viewed all areas of the home and garden used by children.  The inspector talked to the childminder and the children at appropriate times during the visit.  The inspector spoke to parents and took account of their written views.  The inspector viewed a range of documentation and discussed it with the childminder.

p.2

who attend. This is good

The quality of teaching is good. Children are prepared well for school because the childminder provides activities and play experiences that encourage them to share, take turns and become independent. During the inspection, children enjoyed playing animal dominos with the childminder. They confidently identified and matched the animals and patiently waited for their turn. Some children correctly identified that they had four pieces left, used one, and were left with three, smiling proudly as they got lots of praise. Children develop mathematical language further as they talk about issues such as how fast or slow the cars go up and down the ramp. Children learn new words, such as 'cube' and 'cylinder' as they explore wooden shapes. However, the childminder does not provide many opportunities for children to see familiar words around the environment to enhance their early literacy skills.

p.3

good

Children are very happy and settled. They choose what they want to play with from a good range of easily accessible toys and resources. Children independently use the stairs to go to the toilet, wash their hands and cut up fruit for a snack. They ask the childminder for support when needed. Consequently, the childminder encourages their growing confidence and physical development well. Children develop physical skills and gain an awareness of the outdoor world as they explore the garden. They water the plants with a small sprayer and notice small bugs on the leaves. The childminder extends their interest by encouraging them to look at the bugs under a magnifying glass. Children notice, with interest, the different colours, shapes and how many legs the bugs have.

p.3

provision is good

The childminder has a good understanding of her responsibilities and meets requirements well. The childminder has improved her practice and encourages parents to be part of their children's learning. Parents complete 'proud clouds' to share achievements and special moments at home. The childminder observes and assesses children's progress on a regular basis. She tracks their achievements and works closely with pre-schools to target specific areas of development for individual children. As a result, children make good progress in their learning and development. The childminder has clear action plans to address areas for development. For example, she has identified that she intends to do further training to enhance her professional development. The childminder uses questionnaires and has regular discussions to enable parents and children to share their views on her setting.
