This provision is good
The childminder gets to know each child well by carefully observing and assessing them. This enables her to plan effectively and meet their individual learning and development needs. Children are kept safe because the childminder has a good understanding of how to protect them from harm. She successfully identifies and minimises potential risks to children. Partnerships with others, including parents and the local schools, are strong. Relevant information is shared about children so that they benefit from continuity in their care and learning. Children are happy, settled and relaxed. This is because the childminder provides a welcoming environment and has familiar routines, which she implements with care and affection. Children attend various groups in the local community, where they socialise with others of their own age. These experiences help to prepare young children for the move to nursery or school.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
Children have fewer opportunities in the outdoor environment to explore the natural world. The childminder occasionally misses opportunities to further challenge the thinking of more-able children.
p.1
What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

who attend. This is good
The childminder fully understands how children effectively learn through play. She uses good teaching methods to ensure children progress well in their learning. Children learn about shapes and colours through numerous activities to reinforce their understanding. For example, they talk about the colours of buckets and cups and the different shapes of paper when gluing them on a picture. The childminder promotes children's communication and language skills through constant discussion about what they are doing or what they can see. However, more-able children are not always challenged fully to think as deeply as possible. This is because the childminder does not always extend her questioning further to prompt them to do so. Children learn mathematical skills as they count the number of balls threaded on a string. Stacking tubes and large reels enable children to understand positioning as well as developing their physical coordination. As a result of such engaging

good
Children are happy in this welcoming and friendly setting. The childminder provides children with a stimulating and homely environment to play and learn in. She provides many accessible and age-appropriate toys and resources. This enables children to make independent choices in their play. Children's behaviour is good because the childminder is a good role model. She consistently uses positive praise and reminds children of rules and boundaries. The childminder extends children's awareness of healthy lifestyles by promoting a healthy diet and good hygiene. Children are given many opportunities to develop their confidence and gain independence. They are encouraged to put on their own shoes, wash and dry their own hands and tidy away toys. Children get daily access to fresh air and physical exercise through activities outdoors. They pretend to be crabs, walking sideways while balancing on a beam. They use a slide and enjoy tipping and

pouring water through tubes. However, children do not have many opportunities to explore the natural world and investigate nature outdoors.

provision is good
The childminder has a good knowledge of the Early Years Foundation Stage requirements. She has a formal childcare qualification, which has a good impact on the learning experiences she offers children. She updates her knowledge through training courses and implements what she learns into practice effectively. The childminder has a good range of policies and procedures in place, which are used effectively to support children's health, safety and well-being. The childminder strives to improve by regularly reflecting and evaluating her practice. She incorporates feedback from children and parents and, as a result, there is strong capacity for continuous improvement.
