p.1

This provision is good

 The childminder talks to children, describing what they are doing during their play and asking them questions, which extends their ideas and thinking and provides them with appropriate challenge.  Children develop close bonds with the childminder because she is friendly and sensitive to their individual needs. As a result, they settle and behave well, are motivated to learn and develop confidence.  The childminder provides a safe and secure environment that effectively aids children's growing understanding of how to keep themselves safe and healthy.  Partnerships with parents and other settings are positive and supportive. The childminder obtains information about children's individual needs when they start, and keeps parents and others well informed about children's learning. This promotes continuity in children's learning and care.  The childminder effectively reflects on her practice to identify what is working well and

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not have enough natural resources readily available that children can use in different ways to promote exploration and discovery in their play.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

 improve the range of opportunities available for children to explore, investigate and to become curious, for example, by introducing more natural resources.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder's practice with the children.  The inspector discussed the children's development.  The inspector discussed the process of self-evaluation and how the childminder obtains the views of all the users of her provision.  The inspector examined a selection of documentation.

who attend. This is good

The childminder teaches children well and promotes their learning through a wide range of planned and purposeful play. Children's communication and listening skills develop well. This is because the childminder uses descriptive language during their play to introduce new words and extend their vocabulary. She models language, such as 'ready, steady, go' as they kick footballs around the garden. Children count routinely with the childminder as they collect and sort apples into a bucket together. However, she does not provide enough opportunities for them to develop a strong exploratory impulse, for example, through exploring and investigating resources from natural materials. The childminder regularly assesses children's development and uses this information to plan further activities to meet their emerging learning needs. This helps her to identify any gaps in their learning and take action to minimise these. As a result, all children develop the skills that they

need to prepare them for their next stage in learning.

good

Children develop close attachments with the childminder, who responds to them with warmth and kindness. This is evident as children come to her for cuddles and make independent choices about what they want to do. The childminder promotes children's good health well. Children have daily opportunities to enjoy physical activity. For example, they laugh and giggle as they try to catch balls that are being chased by the childminder's small dog. They enjoy building dens in the woods, going on daily walks to the park and spotting the birds flying over the garden. The childminder provides healthy snacks and drinks of water. She encourages children to manage their own personal hygiene needs; young children know to wash their hands before snack after playing in the garden.

p.3

provision is good

The childminder has a secure knowledge of the Early Years Foundation Stage and implements the requirements well. She monitors the range of activities she provides and children's progress to ensure they are well supported. The childminder reviews her practice to establish what she does well and to identify areas for improvement. She holds a recognised childcare qualification which she builds on by attending further relevant training to ensure she is up to date with any changes, for example, for safeguarding procedures. As a result, she has a secure understanding of the procedures she should follow to safeguard children's welfare and of how to recognise the signs and symptoms of abuse. Since her last inspection, she has created an imaginative garden space where children enjoy a range of sensory play and make 'cakes' in the mud kitchen. As a result, children are interested and motivated to learn and make good progress.
