p.1

This provision is good

 The childminder attends relevant safeguarding training. As a result, she knows what procedures to follow should she have any concerns about the welfare of a child in her care.  The childminder places a high priority on play and learning in the outdoor environment. All children explore the garden with enthusiasm and excitement.  Children make good progress. The childminder makes good use of observations and assessments to plan and provide a variety of activities.  Children are happy and settled. The childminder builds strong relationships with children, which helps to promote their personal, social and emotional development.  Children learn how to keep themselves safe by taking part in regular fire-evacuation procedures within the childminder's home.  The childminder consistently extends children's independence skills by allowing them to make choices about their play.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder is not successfully obtaining all information from other settings that children attend.  The childminder does not fully gain all information from parents about their children's prior learning achievements when they start in her care.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 strengthen ways to link with other settings children attend, so that two-way communication is in place, in order to enhance children's continued learning and development  plan for children's learning needs as soon as they start attending her setting by finding out from parents what children already know and can do.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector spoke to the childminder at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector viewed the areas of the premises and garden that are used for childminding.  The inspector looked at children's observation and assessment records.  The inspector observed children's activities, both indoors and outdoors.  The inspector checked evidence of the childminder's qualification and the suitability of all adults in the household.

who attend. This is good

The childminder is effective in planning activities that are challenging and interesting for children. This is due to her good understanding of the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage. The childminder completes accurate, detailed assessments of children and uses this information to identify the next steps in their learning. However, at the beginning of the placement she does not always find out from parents what children already know and can do. Children initiate their own play and make choices from the good variety of equipment that is available. They follow their interests and develop their early writing skills using the different resources available. Children develop their understanding of mathematics because they have regular opportunities to see and use numbers during routine activities, both indoors and outdoors.

good

The childminder gathers some information from parents when children first start in her care. For example, she finds out about any allergies to ensure that their dietary requirements are fully met. Babies' routines are followed closely by the childminder to make sure that they settle quickly and smoothly into her setting. The childminder constantly talks to children throughout the day, giving them praise and promoting their confidence in their abilities. Children behave well and follow the rules in place as they listen carefully to the childminder's instructions. The childminder understands and meets children's personal-care routines. Children learn to wash their hands before meals and after messy play. Younger children's self-esteem and confidence is promoted well as they play with other children and meet other childminders in the local community. This helps them to increase their social skills and prepares them well for the next stage in their

p.3

provision is good

The childminder uses her qualification to good effect and, as a result, children's learning and care are effectively promoted. She continuously develops her practice and maintains her professional development through regular attendance on training courses. Consequently, her knowledge and understanding is up to date and this impacts on her good practice. Partnerships with parents are good. Termly reports about children's achievements are shared, ensuring their learning is supported at home. Questionnaires indicate that parents are very happy with the service they receive. They particularly appreciate the information the childminder gives them. However, the childminder is not always successful in fully obtaining all information from other settings children attend. This means children's achievements elsewhere are not always known or built upon.
