p.1

This provision is good

 Children are happy and settled. They develop secure emotional attachments in this exceptionally warm and welcoming setting with the childminder.  Children's language and communication skills are given high priority. The childminder encourages children in conversation, helping them to develop their vocabulary and become skilful communicators.  Overall, teaching is good. Children are able to play in a stimulating environment that is safe and secure. The childminder ensures resources and toys are readily available, to enable children to make choices about what they want to play with.  The childminder encourages healthy lifestyles by ensuring children have daily opportunities to access fresh air and physical exercise. Children are also learning to independently manage their personal care needs.  The childminder effectively evaluates the quality of her service and actively seeks training to promote ongoing improvements to her practice.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Occasionally, the childminder misses some opportunities to fully engage parents in sharing their children's achievements at home and by fully involving them in planning next steps in children's learning.  The childminder does not always provide opportunities for children to independently explore and investigate natural resources in the outdoor environment to extend their learning further.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 increase opportunities to engage parents fully by seeking their comments about children's learning at home, to complement their progress further  extend opportunities for children to think more creatively by increasing the range of natural materials and real-life resources, so they learn to investigate and explore, particularly in the outdoor play area.

p.2

p.2

who attend. This is good

The childminder plans activities based on children's interests and the next steps for their learning. Therefore, children show great interest in the range of activities on offer and engage themselves well in good quality play experiences. The childminder interacts well with children as they play imaginary games using the resources in the home corner. She uses this opportunity well to encourage them to count and work out how much money they need to buy the 'milk' from their pretend shop. Children develop good literacy skills, as they have a wealth of opportunities to see and use print within their environment. The childminder provides stimulating resources that children enjoy. For example, children explore with building blocks and the childminder helps them learn basic mathematical concepts, such as comparing different shapes and sizes as they build towers. Overall, children are learning the necessary skills they need to support their future learning.

p.3

good

The childminder provides children with good experiences outside of the home. They go on regular local walks and outings, such as visits to various parks and the city farm where they follow nature trails. This also promotes children's physical well-being and their understanding of the local community. Children are confident in their surroundings, which motivates them to learn. Through attending various playgroups and the library, children socialise with a wider range of children and adults. Effective hygiene routines are in place and children are learning about the benefits of adopting a healthy lifestyle. Children get plenty of fresh fruit at snack time and regular drinks throughout the day. They are aware of safe practices, such as hand-washing procedures before meals and after using the toilet. The childminder ensures her home is hygienically clean in order to reduce the risk of cross-infection.

p.3

provision is good

The childminder has a secure knowledge of the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage. She regularly updates her knowledge through training. She uses this to good effect in order to plan interesting activities that promote children's learning and development. The childminder has a secure knowledge of her responsibility to safeguard children and of who to contact if she has concerns about their welfare. She conducts and reviews risk assessments regularly to highlight and correct any potential risks to children. Consequently, children play in a safe environment in the childminder's home and when on outings. The childminder builds good partnerships with parents and keeps them up to date on her plans for children's activities.
