Previous inspection: Inadequate 4 How well the early years provision meets the needs of the range of children who attend Requires improvement The contribution of the early years provision to the well-being of children Requires improvement The effectiveness of the leadership and management of the early years provision Requires improvement The setting does not meet legal requirements for early years settings

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder does not have a consistent approach for obtaining written consent from parents to administer medication to children.  The childminder does not always ensure the information gained from observations is consistently used to plan challenging and enjoyable activities for children across all areas of learning.  The childminder does not provide many opportunities for parents to contribute their own observations of children's achievements at home, so that she can work even more effectively with them to meet children's needs.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 Children relate well to the childminder and they are happy in her care because she displays a kind, caring nature. The childminder's frequent praise and encouragement promotes children's confidence and suitably fosters their emotional well-being.  Children follow good hygiene routines and enjoy healthy snacks. They have opportunities each day to enjoy outdoor play, which promotes their confidence and physical development.  The childminder is clear about the procedures to follow in the event of a safeguarding concern about a child in her care, and the procedure regarding allegations. She has taken positive steps to minimise risks within the home and on outings, in order to keep children safe.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage the provider must:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 ensure written permission from parents and carers is obtained for each particular medication administered to children, prior to it being given  ensure that information gained from observations and assessments is used consistently to identify relevant next steps in children's learning and to plan challenging and enjoyable activities, which promote children's good progress across all areas of learning.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 help parents to share what they know about their child in relation to their ongoing learning and development, and use this information to contribute towards the planning of activities.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the Childcare Register the provider must:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 keep records of medicine administered to any child who is cared for on the premises, including the date, circumstances and who administered it, together with a record of a parent/guardian/carer's consent (compulsory part of the Childcare Register)  keep records of medicine administered to any child who is cared for on the premises, including the date, circumstances and who administered it, together with a record of a parent/guardian/carer's consent (voluntary part of the Childcare Register).

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector had a tour of the premises during the inspection.  The inspector spoke to the childminder and children at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector observed activities in the childminder's home, both inside and in the garden.  The inspector sampled a range of documentation, including evidence of the suitability of adults living on the premises, children's development records and a selection of policies and procedures.  The inspector talked to the childminder about her self-evaluation document and plans for improvement.

who attend. This requires improvement

The childminder has taken positive steps to improve the way she observes and assesses children's progress. She is beginning to use the information gained from her observations to focus more on children's next steps in learning. However, the system is not embedded to ensure it is fully effective. This means that learning experiences provided, are not always matched closely enough to children's needs or cover all areas of learning sufficiently. The childminder uses some suitable teaching strategies. For example, she joins in with children's play, asking them questions to stimulate their interest and enjoyment. Children enjoy looking at books, listening to stories and singing nursery rhymes. This helps develop their communication and language skills. Children access a good range of puzzles, which fosters their understanding of space and shape. They explore and investigate how things work. For example, children push buttons on electronic

toys to make a sound. Children enjoy the time spent in the garden and playing in the sand. Overall, children are gaining some of the skills needed to help them move on to their next phase in learning.

requires improvement

Children play in a safe and secure environment. Records for medication administered to children are documented appropriately and shared with parents at the end of the day. However, written consent to administer medication is not always obtained when parents send in medicines. Play and learning areas are appropriately organised to enable children to develop independence skills and make choices about what they would like to do. The childminder helps children to learn how to keep themselves safe as they play and use the slide and swing in the garden. Relationships with parents work generally well and a good range of information is shared each day with regard to children's well-being. However, parents are not fully encouraged to contribute their own observations, so that they work together even more effectively to meet children's learning needs.

p.3

provision requires improvement

The childminder has a suitable understanding of the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage. She has developed a range of policies and procedures, which are shared with parents. However, these are not always implemented effectively to fully ensure children's safety. This is with particular regard to administering medication. Since the last inspection, the childminder has worked closely with the local authority early years team and completed training to improve her provision. Observation and assessment has been reviewed and improved. However, these initiatives are not fully secure to ensure children make the best possible progress in their learning in readiness for school. Positive action has been taken to improve the safety of the premises and children now have regular access to outdoor play. The childminder has started to evaluate her provision and is committed to ongoing improvement.
