Since the last inspection the home has continued to make progress and to identify and act upon areas for development. For example, there have been a very significant reduction in missing from home episodes for young people, who prior to admission were placing themselves at risk by these behaviours. A young person who previously was not allowed access to a mobile phone or free time in town now has both. The young person said 'staff value me and care for me. There is nothing I need to run away from.' and 'Staff respect young people and listen to their views. They know that we need to be the ones who make decisions about our lives.'

p.2

This inspection

All young people are engaged in full time education and are proud to share the positive comments they had received in their end of term reports. One young person said' I had missed loads of school. But now I am in a new school and staff are working with my teachers to help me catch. Staff make maths feel like fun.' Another young person received an award for the significant progress they have made. An education provider commented that 'Staff ensure that they find the most appropriate educational setting for each young person. They came to the school and spent time explaining about the young person's needs before placing him with us. They work with us to support young people's positive achievements'.

p.2

This inspection

Young people thrive within this home where all of their unique and diverse needs are carefully planned for and met. One young person said' This is the first time I have ever been able to completely be myself and be accepted'. Another said 'I know that the staff care for me and value me for who I am. We accept everyone is different, you like people for who they are not what they wear'.

Young people know what is expected of them and respond positively to the consistently high quality of care they receive. They respond well to the nurturing environment and the security and feelings of safety this home promotes. This 3 of 5 supports them to achieve their potential and enhances their capacity to develop trust and respect for the adults who care for them. One young person commented 'The children's home is good because they genuinely care and love you. They make sure you fell safe and secure within the home.'

This inspection

Young people learn appropriate ways of expressing frustration and anger as a result of consistent and targeted behaviour management approaches. Physical interventions are very rare and negative consequences (sanctions) are commensurate enabling young people to understand the consequences of their actions. Staff work hard to promote young people's abilities to managing emotional responses to situations. They affirm and reward positive behaviours. They spend time ensuring young people understand the impact of negative behaviours on both staff and other young people, supporting them to develop emotional maturity.

p.3

This inspection

A strong feature of this setting is the high calibre of staff, who have the ability to work consistently for the best interests of the young people. Professionals report positively about the excellent communication between themselves and the home and how this benefits young people. A social worker said, 'I have found the staff at Moss House excellent to deal with and very, very professional. I have always felt whenever I visit this care setting that as a looked after child I would like to live here. I can honestly say of all the settings I visit, this is my would be first choice if I needed to be accommodated". Another placing authority stated 'In the months that we have worked with Moss House they have always been professional, caring and well-organised.'

p.3

This inspection

The dedicated and skilled newly Registered Manager robustly monitors the care provided and continuously strives to find new ways to further improve care and outcomes for young people. Following the previous inspection one recommendation was made. This has been addressed and all staff either hold or are undertaking an appropriate child care qualification. The Registered Manager routinely obtains the views of young people, their family members and other interested parties and incorporates those in care practice. One professional sums it by saying '"I am always asked my professional opinion and if there has been a difference of opinion with other agencies, we have worked in close partnership to ensure the best and most appropriate outcome for that individual young person " 4 of 5
