The setting meets legal requirements for early years settings

p.1

This provision is good

 The childminder effectively promotes children's health, safety and security through daily routines and by following relevant safeguarding procedures to keep children safe.  The childminder builds on children's existing skills and effectively promotes their learning and development by providing challenging activities and play opportunities throughout their daily routine.  The childminder's good partnerships with parents contribute considerably to meeting children's well-being. Therefore, children settle-in quickly and form close attachments with the childminder.  Children benefit immensely from their weekly visits to toddler groups where they develop friendships beyond the childminder's setting and learn to play cooperatively in a small group.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Although children follow daily hygiene routines, the childminder misses opportunities at times to help them to understand the reasons for good personal hygiene, such as washing their hands.  The childminder provides fewer opportunities for children to use simple tools in their exploration of nature and living things in order to pursue their interests and increase their curiosity further.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 promote further the importance of following good personal hygiene routines, to help increase children's understanding  provide opportunities for children to use a range of suitable resources and tools, to extend further their interest in living things and the natural environment.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector held discussions with the childminder about her role and responsibilities.  The inspector viewed the areas used by the children and observed the childminder's interaction with them.  The inspector sampled some documents, including children's registration forms, the accident and medication records, the attendance register, the childminder's written policies and children's assessment records.  The inspector took account of the views of the parents spoken to on the day of the inspection.

who attend. This is good

The childminder regularly observes and records children's achievements. She uses her knowledge of the children to provide purposeful activities to support and extend their learning. The childminder encourages children to develop their independence skills. For example, young children learn to feed themselves and older children are able to undress and dress themselves before and after sleep, and select toys to play with. Consequently, children acquire the skills they need in preparation for the next stage in their learning and for school. The childminder supports children's language development well by giving a running commentary of her actions. She repeats and expands on what children say and uses simple words and gestures when talking to young children. The childminder provides good opportunities for children to learn to recognise numbers and develop their counting skills, in order to use in everyday contexts. Overall, the childminder offers children suitable

opportunities to explore natural materials and learn about living things.

p.3

good

The childminder works closely with parents to devise a settling-in plan which she tailors to the children's specific needs. As a result, children settle quickly and form trustful relationships with the childminder. Children develop positive self-esteem because they receive lots of praise and encouragement from the childminder. In addition, they respond to requests for good behaviour and learn how to stay safe. This helps children to develop an awareness of the needs of others and to learn to be responsible for the environment and their safety. The childminder's daily routine and the nutritious meals she offers to children help to promote their good health. Children enjoy daily physical exercise and, as a result, they use mobile equipment with confidence and develop new physical skills.

p.3

provision is good

The childminder has a secure knowledge and understanding of child protection issues and knows how to proceed if she has any welfare concerns about a child. In addition, she carries out daily risk assessments to reduce hazards to children and has procedures in place to prevent unauthorised visitors gaining access. The childminder attends a number of training courses to keep up to date with changing practices and to develop her childcare skills. In addition, the childminder welcomes the support she receives from the Local Authority advisors. As a result, the childminder offers children a varied range of activities to help them make good progress. The childminder establishes good partnerships with parents. The parents comment that they are very happy with the care and learning their children receive at the setting. The childminder constantly evaluates her practices by identifying areas for development in order to improve the care she offers to children.
