The setting meets legal requirements for early years settings

p.1

This provision is good

 The childminder has a good understanding of how to meet the safeguarding and welfare requirements. She updates her child protection training regularly and knows what action to take should she have concerns about the welfare of a child.  The childminder has a good understanding of how to meet the learning and development requirements. She plans a wide range of interesting activities to develop children's learning and engage them in play. As a result, children are eager and enthusiastic learners.  Children's well-being is good. Children build strong relationships with the childminder and her assistants and are clearly secure and confident in their care. This promotes children's emotional development.  The childminder has good partnerships with parents and other professionals. Her regular communication and information sharing provides children with strongly consistent care.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder asks children for their ideas and thoughts as they play and at group times. However, she generally accepts their first answers instead of encouraging children to explore what else is possible. This does not fully extend children's creative thinking skills at all times.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

 encourage children to suggest different ideas and solutions to build on their creative thinking skills.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed children at play indoors and outdoors.  The inspector examined a range of documentation, including children's records.  The inspector spoke to the childminder's assistant and discussed safeguarding and monitoring with the childminder.  The inspector and childminder evaluated the children's activities during the inspection.

p.2

who attend. This is good

The childminder meets with parents when children first start to discuss children's current abilities and needs. She tailors activities to suit children individually and quickly builds their skills. The childminder carries out regular reviews of children's progress which she shares with parents, showing that children make strong progress in their learning. The childminder is a skilled teacher. She extends the challenges in children's play to encourage their curiosity and problem solving. For example, when children poured water using jugs and funnels, she showed them how blocking the funnel changed what was happening. The childminder uses sign language consistently with children to add to their communication skills. This is very well established so all children can communicate with children who have additional needs and younger children build strong skills. This is very inclusive practice.

p.3

good

Children are confident and motivated to learn. The childminder works effectively with her co-childminder and assistants to create a strong learning environment where children are very independent. The childminder encourages children to choose what to play and they freely access a wide range of good-quality resources. Children eat a healthy range of snacks and meals. The childminder and her assistants know the children's individual care routines and tailor their routine around them. This good-quality care promotes children's overall physical care and development. Children are well behaved and understand how to take turns and share their toys and resources. Children help to tidy up and enjoy being helpful. They invite their friends to play with them, especially in role play where they work together on shared ideas. Overall, children gain good skills to help them in their future learning.

p.3

provision is good

The childminder works very effectively with her co-childminder and assistants to review and update their policies in line with current practice. This means that they work closely as a team and have a strong shared understanding of their roles and responsibilities. The childminder and her assistants regularly attend training and pass on the details of what they have learned to their colleagues. For example, the childminder teaches others about her sign language training and this has a positive impact on children's communication skills. The childminder works alongside the assistants at all times and has a good understanding of their strengths and experience. She uses regular meetings to reflect on their practice and make improvements. For example, they recently agreed to increase the focus on helping children to recognise letters.
