Previous inspection: Good 2 How well the early years provision meets the needs of the range of children who attend Requires improvement The contribution of the early years provision to the well-being of children Requires improvement The effectiveness of the leadership and management of the early years provision Requires improvement The setting does not meet legal requirements for early years settings
p.1
This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:
The childminder has not updated her safeguarding policy and the reporting procedure to fully maintain children's welfare. This is a breach of the requirements of the Early Years Register and the Childcare Register. The quality of teaching varies because the childminder does not always adapt activities to ensure that they are suitably challenging. Consequently, children do not progress to their full potential and gain more than the basic skills required for the next stage of learning and eventually for school. The childminder does not make good use of planned and unplanned opportunities in the garden to enhance and extend children's learning.
p.1
It has the following strengths
The childminder encourages children to enjoy books and supports their conversations and early reading skills. They sit closely together carefully turning the pages and talk about the pictures. The childminder shares information about children's achievements with parents and the other early years settings that children also attend. This means that children receive consistency and this helps to develop their learning at home. The childminder is sensitive in helping children to form secure emotional attachments. She has a kind and caring approach and provides a warm atmosphere. As a result, children feel valued and confident. The childminder provides a range of nutritious meals and snacks and frequently asks the children for ideas for the menu.

Inspection activities
The inspector observed activities on the ground floor of the premises and talked with the children. The inspector undertook a joint observation with the childminder. The inspector talked to the childminder at various times throughout the inspection and looked at a sample of the children's records of learning. The inspector checked evidence of the suitability and qualifications of the childminder, her self-evaluation and improvement plan. The inspector took account of the views of parents from information included in the childminder's parental survey.

who attend. This requires improvement
The childminder has an adequate understanding of how children learn through play. She suitably observes and assesses children's play to identify some of the next steps for children's learning. She has appropriate systems to complete the progress check for two- year-old children. The childminder skilfully supports children's language development by speaking clearly and introduces different tones and rhythms in her voice. She is actively involved in children's imaginative games and the retelling of traditional tales. The childminder is well qualified and has many years' experience of caring for children. However, she does not always introduce any further challenge to help children develop their interests further to make the most of their learning. For example, the childminder does not extend repetitive activities to widen children's experiences and build on what they already know. Children enjoy exercising outdoors. However, the childminder has not

fully considered how she could make better use of the garden to further enhance children's experiences and development across all the areas of learning.
p.3
requires improvement
The childminder provides clear guidance to children about what is acceptable behaviour. She sensitively reminds them to say `please' and `thank you' and provides alternative activities to divert children's attention. She provides a sticker chart to help children to be eager to behave well and they receive a sticker as a reward. Young and older children are encouraged to play together and they enjoyed an activity relating to pirates, including a treasure hunt. The childminder shows that she values children's achievements as she displays their pictures and work. Children enjoy looking at the photographs of their friends and their siblings that have been cared for in the past by the childminder. This helps them develop a strong sense of belonging and gain the social and emotional skills they need for moving on to the next stage of their learning.
p.3
provision requires improvement
The childminder has a reasonable understanding of the Early Years Foundation Stage requirements. She has updated her first-aid certificate to attend appropriately to children's minor accidents and has a basic understanding of child protection issues. However, the childminder has not updated her child protection policy to include the use of mobile phones and cameras. She does not have the most recent safeguarding reporting procedures easily to hand to refer to, in the event that she has any concerns about a child's welfare. The childminder has begun to evaluate the quality of her service to reflect on what works well. She has made suitable progress in addressing the actions made at a previous inspection.
