Previous inspection: Good 2 How well the early years provision meets the needs of the range of children who attend Requires improvement The contribution of the early years provision to the well-being of children Requires improvement The effectiveness of the leadership and management of the early years provision Requires improvement The setting does not meet legal requirements for early years settings

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder does not have all documents available for inspection; specifically she has no evidence that she has completed her first-aid qualification.  Sometimes children are distracted and unable to concentrate because the childminder leaves the television on for much of the day.  Self-evaluation does not involve the views of parents or children to effectively drive improvements.  The childminder does not provide children with a wide range of books, to encourage their early reading skills.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 Children are safeguarded because the childminder is fully aware of her responsibilities to protect them from abuse and neglect. She carries out regular risk assessments and successfully minimises potential hazards in her home and garden.  The quality of observation, planning and assessment helps the childminder provide interesting activities that generally engage children and encourage their learning.  Children's emotional well-being is supported, as the childminder creates plenty of opportunities for them to manage their self-care needs.  The childminder regularly meets with other childminders to discuss childcare issues and attends training events to build on her good knowledge, understanding and practice. Since her last inspection the childminder has completed a relevant childcare qualification at level 3, which supports her to raise the quality of teaching.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage the provider must:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 ensure that all records are available for inspection; specifically evidence of a first-aid qualification  promote children's communication and language development by reducing the use of the television, to limit distraction to children's concentration, learning and development.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 use self-evaluation more effectively to prioritise areas for improvement, in order to maintain and develop the quality of the provision, and seek the views of parents and children  improve the range and organisation of books available for children, to enhance early reading skills.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the Childcare Register the provider must:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 ensure that evidence of a first-aid qualification is available at inspection (compulsory part of the Childcare Register)  ensure that evidence of a first-aid qualification is available at inspection (voluntary part of the Childcare Register).

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector had a tour of the childminder's home, including the kitchen, garden and play areas.  The inspector observed the childminder caring for and playing with the children.  The inspector spoke to the childminder about their practice at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector sampled children's progress records, the childminder's self-evaluation documents, the registers of attendance and a range of other documents, including safeguarding, accident and medication records.  The inspector checked evidence of the childminder's qualifications and the suitability of all adults living at the premises.

p.2

who attend. This requires improvement

Overall, the quality of teaching appropriately supports children in their learning and development. This is because the childminder is skilled in identifying when to intervene in children's play to support them further. For example, when young children show an interest in playing with tractors and trucks, the childminder extends this learning opportunity further through identifying the different colours and naming the vehicles, therefore, promoting children's mathematical understanding. Consequently, children are gaining the necessary skills in preparation for the next stage of their learning and school. The childminder supports children's early literacy skills well and children enjoy their favourite stories. However, the organisation and range of the books available make it difficult for the younger children to find age-appropriate books, to build on their interest in reading. In addition, children become distracted by the television during activities and

story times. As a result, children's concentration, learning and development are not fully promoted.

p.3

requires improvement

The childminder's home is welcoming. The childminder is friendly and the children have positive relationships with her and each other. Children are well behaved because the childminder acknowledges good behaviour through consistent meaningful praise. In addition, she praises children's contributions to activities and completion of tasks, which boosts their motivation and self-esteem. The childminder has ongoing discussions with parents and carers to meet children's routines during the day. Children have daily opportunities for fresh air, through physical play in the local parks and walks to school or nursery. The childminder promotes children's all-round good health within the daily provision of food, fresh air, exercise and hygiene routines.

p.3

provision requires improvement

The childminder has a satisfactory understanding of the safeguarding and welfare requirements. She has detailed policies and procedures to follow in the event of a concern. Risk assessments and suitability checks are in place for all adults living on the premises. Not all documentation is available for inspection. The childminder is unable to produce any evidence of her recent first-aid training and she has not ensured she has received her confirmation certificate. However, she has a clear procedure and understanding of recording and dealing with accidents and injuries. Partnerships with other professionals and parents are established. However, the childminder does not fully involve parents or children in the self-evaluation of her provision to ensure the focus is on improving teaching and learning. Effective systems for planning and assessment are in place, resulting in children receiving varied learning opportunities throughout the day.
