What the setting needs to do to improve further
improve the quality of teaching by developing a secure understanding of assessment and planning, to identify and meet children's individual learning needs ensure regular and precise assessments are completed and use this information to identify and promote children's next steps in learning so that they make good progress provide opportunities for children to make choices and develop their independence as they play, for example, by organising play resources so that children initiate their own play and follow their own interests.

Inspection activities

who attend. This requires improvement
The childminder provides a varied range of activities to promote children's development across the seven areas of learning. However, the quality of teaching is variable. The childminder does not use her knowledge about children's achievements to complete regular and precise assessments. As a result, she is not always focused enough and does not make sure activities are always planned and adapted to promote children's next steps in learning. This means at times, some activities have too little or too much challenge. Therefore, children are not always supported to make the best possible progress in their learning. The childminder is skilled in engaging children in conversations. This helps children to learn to take turns in listening and talking, which helps children to get ready for starting school. The childminder helps children to use the correct vocabulary to describe the shape, position, number, colour and texture of the toys they play with. This

helps to promote children's mathematical skills. Children enjoy playing imaginatively, recalling and talking about previous events. They enjoy looking at books with the childminder and listening to stories.

requires improvement
Children are given time and encouragement to develop their self-care skills, which helps to promote their independence. Children are supported to make choices about what they would like to eat. However, children's choice and independence is not always fully promoted during their play. At times, the childminder only sets out one type of resources for children to play with, such as bricks. The wide and varied selection of other toys are not always made available. As a result, children are not always stimulated to make choices or to initiate their own play and follow their own interests. Children enjoy being active outdoors and they develop good physical skills as they learn to ride wheeled toys, such as scooters. Children's social skills are promoted well. Children meet and play with other children at local groups. The childminder teaches children to share, take turns and consider others.
p.3
provision requires improvement
The childminder has a strong understanding of her responsibility to protect and safeguard children. She completes regular safeguarding training and this helps her to gain a deeper knowledge of child protection and safeguarding issues. The childminder completes self- evaluation and seeks the view of parents and children. This helps her to plan for future improvements. Current improvements include enhancing children's learning experiences in her garden. The childminder recognises that her understanding of assessment and planning processes is not strong enough. However, she has not taken enough steps to address this weakness.
