The effectiveness of the leadership and management of the early years provision Requires improvement The setting does not meet legal requirements for early years settings

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder has not fully explored strategies to engage all parents in their children's learning in the setting and at home.  The childminder does not include the views of parents and children in self-evaluation procedures when identifying the strengths and weaknesses of the setting and prioritising areas for development for the benefit of the children.  The childminder does not always provide children with opportunities to manage their own hygiene and personal needs, and to serve themselves at snack and meal times. As a result, they have fewer opportunities to be independent and develop their self-care skills.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The childminder provides a warm and caring environment for children. Children are happy and settled, and behave well.  Children are kept safe from harm. The childminder assesses risks in her home and on outings and takes appropriate action to minimise risks to children.  The childminder knows children well and responds positively to their individual needs and interests.  Children enjoy healthy snacks and meals. They follow good hygiene procedures and have regular opportunities to play outdoors in the fresh air.  The childminder has recently updated her first-aid qualification and safeguarding training. Consequently, she has a secure understanding of safeguarding procedures and knows what action to take should she have a cause for concern about a child in her care.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage the provider must:

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 develop further strategies to engage all parents in their children's learning in the setting and at home, so that parents have all the information they need to fully support children's progress and development at home.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 develop self-evaluation procedures to include the views of parents and children in order to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the setting and prioritise areas for development in teaching and learning for the benefit of the children  develop further children's independence and self-care skills, for example, by providing opportunities for them to wash their own hands, and to serve themselves and pour their own drinks at snack and meal times.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector viewed all areas of the premises used for childminding.  The inspector talked to the childminder and children at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector observed activities and interactions between the childminder and children during play, and at lunchtime.  The inspector carried out a joint observation with the childminder.  The inspector looked at children's records and planning documentation, risk assessments, certificates, policies and procedures, self-evaluation and evidence of the suitability checks for all adults living in the house.

who attend. This requires improvement

The childminder plans activities to cover the seven areas of learning. She has improved her knowledge of the learning and development requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage through her own personal reading and research, and through the support of other childminders and her local authority development officer. Children enjoy playing with small-world figures and inventing their own stories. Children's mathematical understanding and language development are well supported through card games where they count pictures and identify colours. Since the last inspection the childminder has revised her procedures for recording observations of children's learning and assessments, of their progress and has adopted an effective computer based system. As a result, the childminder is able to monitor children's progress and effectively identify next steps in their learning. All the children are making steady progress and are developing the skills

they need for the next stage in their learning. The childminder exchanges information about children's care and activities with parents on a daily basis but has not yet developed an effective system for sharing information about their progress and development.

p.3

good

The childminder provides children with positive feedback during activities which gives them the emotional support and motivation they need to try new activities and challenge themselves. Children understand the daily routines and boundaries. The childminder provides children with clear explanations about the importance of good behaviour. Children play confidently outdoors, throwing and catching balls, bouncing on the trampoline and playing on ride-on toys. Children's physical needs are well met. Children are learning how to keep themselves safe and healthy. The childminder reminds children about the importance of washing their hands after using the toilet and before eating, and about how to use equipment safely. However, children cannot always reach the toilet or washbasin without help which means that they cannot manage their own hygiene and personal needs. The childminder provides healthy home-cooked meals but children are not

always encouraged to serve themselves or pour their own drinks at snack and lunch times.

p.3

provision requires improvement

The childminder understands her responsibilities and the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage. She is committed to improving her practice and has addressed all the actions raised at the last inspection. The childminder has developed her procedures for supporting children's learning and development and uses behaviour management systems consistently. She uses self-evaluation procedures to identify areas for further development. However, the childminder has not taken account of the views of parents and children in reviewing her practice and identifying targets to improve teaching and learning. The childminder has improved her practice by updating her mandatory training and seeking advice from her childminding network. The childminder shares information with other settings that the children attend to ensure continuity in their care and learning.
